Inspiration
Based on real interviews we had with the student population, we realized that most of them had difficulties figuring out how much free time they actually had. We decided to create this app primarily for first year FAS students who want to get a sense of the workload required.
What it does
The app we built calculates free time based on a per-course workload, amongst other variables like sleep and outside commitments. We calculate the amount of time required for school through lecture hours and credit.
How we built it
We built it with a combination of past project experiences and problem solving. We, using VScode, built the app with HTML and javascript. To increase efficiency, we used AI models to compile data and polish code.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge we ran into was figuring out an objective way to calculate the time required for a certain course load. We solved it by only using objective data and metrics, such as the amount of lecture time and number of credits.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a working product that solves a real problem people in FAS have.
What we learned
We experienced the difficulties of creating an app under time pressure and competition.
What's next for Free Time Calculator
In the future, Free Time Calculator can be improved through more objective data gathering. We plan to integrate the app with major assignment taking apps to time individual users to get a more personalized result.
