Inspiration

We were inspired by a simple game we used to play with friends. One person would read a list of random words out loud, and everyone else would quickly write them down on paper to try to remember them. Later, the host would ask questions like, “What was the third word?” or “What came after turtle?” It was fast, competitive, and full of laughter.

But today, friends often live in different cities. It’s harder to gather in person and play these small, spontaneous games together. Most online games don’t feel as personal or expressive as writing with a real pen.

We wanted to bring that experience back — but powered by AI and mixed reality.

That’s how Free Sketch was created.

What it does

Free Sketch is an AI-powered mixed reality party game built around MX Ink.

The AI generates a list of random words, and players use MX Ink to sketch them on a shared virtual board to help memorize them. Drawing becomes part of the strategy — how you organize and sketch affects how well you remember.

Then the AI starts the challenge, asking questions like, “What was the third word?” Players race to hit the buzzer, and the fastest correct answer earns points.

Everyone can see each other’s sketches, making the experience competitive, creative, and often hilarious.

Free Sketch brings back the fun of pen-and-paper party games — but lets friends meet virtually, draw together, and compete in a shared mixed reality space, with MX Ink at the center of the experience.

How we built it

We built Free Sketch in Unity using the Meta XR Interaction SDK and MX Ink. Multiplayer synchronization is handled with Netcode for GameObjects so everyone sees the same sketches in real time. An AI service generates randomized word lists and runs the memory quiz, while the buzzer and scoring logic keep rounds fast and competitive.

Challenges we ran into

Real-time drawing sync: Keeping line strokes consistent across networked players without latency artifacts. Input fidelity: Making MX Ink feel natural while still performant. Mixed reality alignment: Ensuring the shared board anchored correctly for all players.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Smooth, shared drawing that feels like real pen-and-paper. AI-driven prompts and quiz flow that make each round unique. A fast, party-style loop that works in mixed reality.

What we learned

Small latency issues can break the “real pen” feel—network smoothing matters. Clear UX feedback (buzzers, timers, highlights) is essential for competitive play. Mixed reality games need strong spatial consistency to feel social.

What’s next for Free Sketch

Late-join support and replayed sketches. More game modes (teams, themed rounds, difficulty tiers). Better AI moderation and curated word packs. Expanded device support and cross-platform play.
