Inspiration

Airports are large and scary to navigate, and more often than not we are pressed on time. Finding baggage claims and gates are things that passangers desperately need in order to have a stress-free experience when flying. While airline apps and physical maps of airports are useful, lots of passangers either do not know the existence of them or struggle to find their way across regardless. That's where we come in.

What it does

Whenever you buy a ticket to a flight, you can get a text message directly to your phone with a link to the FlyAR app, which will open up directions to your destination, whether that is another gate to board a connecting flight, or a baggage claim area to get your luggage. With the flight details, we automatically direct you to where you need to go, using augmented reality for unobstructed directions with arrows and voice guidance.

You are able to see the augmented reality directions on the camera, with the added ability to swipe up and see a map of the location and destination.

If you ask me, it looks pretty fly!

How we built it

  • Swift
  • Metal
  • Reality Composer
  • Java
  • Twilio API
  • Apple Maps API

Challenges we ran into

We did not have access to real airport maps, so we were just winging it... Sorry if these puns are a little plane...plane...

To deal with this issue, we tried most map softwares and found that Apple Maps had indoor direction capabilities in airports. We can expand this using any API that gave us the airport map data like Atrius.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our application uses the Twilio API for SMS messaging, which we are really proud of being able to incorporate. We hope our solution helps many passangers with the stressful process of navigating airports using future technology like AR to aid passangers.

What we learned

We learned that none of these jokes really took off.

...tookOff...

The majority of us have never used either Swift or AR technologies, which was an awesome feature to add to our repertoire. Even I never implemented an API before, which is a very useful skill to have as I have come to realize.

What's next for FlyAR

Currently, our app has support for the DFW airport, but in the future, FlyAR could provide assistance to passangers around the world, encompassing all airports.
