Inspiration:
Disasters linked to climate and weather extremes have always been part of our Earth’s system. But they are becoming more frequent and intense as the world warms. No continent is left untouched, with heatwaves, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes causing mass destruction around the world. 90 per cent of disasters are now classed as weather- and climate-related, costing the world economy 520 billion USD each year, while 26 million people are pushed into poverty as a result. Between 80-90% of all documented disasters from natural hazards during the past 10 years have resulted from floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, heat waves and severe storms. Floods are also increasing in frequency and intensity, and the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation is expected to continue to increase due to climate change. So, I have taken flood disaster as a challenge and wanted to make a modern solution using PEGA
Problem Statement:
Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are often caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas. Floods can cause widespread devastation, resulting in loss of life and damages to personal property and critical public health infrastructure. People who live in floodplains or non-resistant buildings, or lack warning systems and awareness of flooding hazard, are most vulnerable to floods. There are 3 common types of floods: • Flash floods are caused by rapid and excessive rainfall that raises water heights quickly, and rivers, streams, channels or roads may be overtaken. • River floods are caused when consistent rain or snow melt forces a river to exceed capacity. • Coastal floods are caused by storm surges associated with tropical cyclones and tsunami.
What it does?
Flood warning system: Flood warning will be generated by executive • Flash Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring. If you are in a flood prone area move immediately to high ground. A flash flood is a sudden violent flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. It is even possible to experience a flash flood in areas not immediately receiving rain.
• Flood Warning: Take Action! A Flood Warning is issued when the hazardous weather event is imminent or already happening. A Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring. • Flood Watch: Be Prepared: A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for a specific hazardous weather event to occur. A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible. • Flood Advisory: Be Aware: An Flood Advisory is issued when a specific weather event that is forecast to occur may become a nuisance. A Flood Advisory is issued when flooding is not expected to be bad enough to issue a warning. However, it may cause significant inconvenience, and if caution is not exercised, it could lead to situations that may threaten life and/or property. Further Action after warning: During a Flood Watch or Warning Below check sheet is send to people ensure • Gather emergency supplies, including non-perishable food and water. Store at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet. Store at least a 3-day supply. • Have immunization records handy (or know the year of your last tetanus shot). o Store immunization records in a waterproof container. • Bring in outdoor items (lawn furniture, grills, trash cans) or tie them down securely. • avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water. During a Flood Warning evacuation appears necessary • allotment of near by camp as per medical requirement • food , water and other basic necessaries requirement are evalvated • Timely activity notification send to people • Return to home after the confirmation Preventive measures • Ensure audit plan • Report the damage/ blocked channel by people • Executive will verify the issue • If it is major issue report to manager • After approval, process will be taken by contract • Resolved issue is update in system
How we built it?
This application is build using Pega App studio This application is build to process and support entire flood disaster management using Pega application. This application can be used all stage of flood disaster – before, during and after flood. Application mission is reduce flood loss with proper maintenance of flood water drainage sources with effective audit and by resolving all complaints on time. To create advanced alert system using Pega and process evacuation systematically. The application is also build for donation management.
Pega Components:
The following are the Pega components configured to enable the proposed solution. Case Types:
Challenges we ran into:
• Ease in control of Flood Disaster by adopting Proper audit system. • On-time rectification of Flood causing issues. • Online monitoring and tracking of all activities. • Complaint Portal enabling us to sort out the major issues and rectifying it. • Notification and warning for any Emergency alert during flood. • Evacuation handling during emergency. • Avoid or Decrease the loss occurring due to flood disaster. • Handling of funds and ensuring it reaches the victims.
What's next for Flood Defender?
• All person’s data can be linked with flood defender for the better alert system • Map API integration will help to select flood alert locations on the map itself. • AI can be implemented for automated alert systems using weather reports.
How do we sell this?
• Ability to flood area Audit condition at anytime • Ability to handle multiple evacuation in single system • Ability to view the requirement of flood affected area from anywhere in world • Ability to handle multiple complaint at a time • Ability to organize the work activities • Ability to monitor all open case condition at anytime • Ability to monitor the executive level work activities at anytime
