Inspiration
Our team was motivated to create the platform Finetic after learning that 44% of Canadian adults 20+ have at least 1 of 10 common chronic conditions. We recognize that these conditions affect people all over the world, including 40% of American adults who have multiple chronic conditions (MCC). Patients with chronic diseases benefit the most from chatbots which can provide specific information and encourage adherence to medication.
What it does
Finetic is an essential web application for people living with chronic conditions like back pain and arthritis. It provides guided videos for a variety of chronic illnesses with their duration time and explains the medical benefits of each. The Finetic AI ChatBot answers questions asked by users about their chronic health problems or general medical concerns. In addition, Finetic has a working click to call feature for Finetic users to contact or book an appointment with Chronic Disease Specialists in Toronto.
How we built it
The frontend of Finetic was made using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap 4. In order for the backend of the Finetic AI ChatBot to function, we used Python, Flask, the ChatterBot library, and chatterbot-corpus module to train our medical data.
Challenges we ran into
Coordinating meetings because of everyone’s busy schedules and other activities. The predominant obstacle we overcame was integrating the Python chatbot into our Flask web application. Furthermore, another challenge we faced was integrating the more complicated chatbot feature of our app with the least amount of text or visual disturbance as possible. It was important that Finetic is user-friendly, and visually appealing while still encompassing different aspects. Although we have features running in the background, in the foreground we tried to keep the UI neat.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of learning how to use Python's Flask Web framework to create a user-friendly web application. Furthermore, our team is proud of creating a fully functional AI chatbot that analyzes and answers questions about health, including chronic conditions.
What we learned
We have learned a lot about frontend languages like HTML/CSS, Bootstrap4 framework, and a new proficiency in using Flask. We learned about the process of designing and creating a prototype through Figma. This allowed us to improve our UI/UX of Finetic and gain insight into the design aspect. Lastly, we learned how to efficiently work as a team with members from different backgrounds by capitalizing on individual strengths.
What's next for Finetic
We aim to create a positive change for people living with chronic conditions like back pain by implementing Finetic in the real world and deploying it to real life users soon. Our team’s next goal is to launch the mobile app version of Finetic so that our resources are easily accessible on iOS phones. Lastly, we plan on expanding beyond back pain and focus on other health problems like heart disease. This is because according to 2017–2018 data, 2.6 million Canadian adults age 20 and over live with diagnosed heart disease.
