Inspiration

The rapid shift to online learning and remote work has led to increased screen time, resulting in poor posture habits for many people, especially students and professionals. With a direct link between good posture, physical well-being, and cognitive performance, we were inspired to create FineSpine—a tool that uses AI and webcam technology to promote healthy posture and prevent long-term health issues.

What it does

FineSpine is an AI-powered slouch detection and posture improvement tool. Using the device's webcam and TensorFlow Pose Detection, FineSpine:

  • Tracks the user's posture in real-time.
  • Detects slouching and provides an alert to sit up straight.
  • Logs slouch durations to help users monitor their posture habits.

How we built it

Front-end: Javascript, HTML, CSS
Back-end: Mongoose, MongoDB, Node.js

Challenges we ran into

  1. It was difficult to learn new programming languages like Mongoose.
  2. Navigating Auth0 authentication API was tricky due to our team's inexperience with it prior to the hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We completed a working web application with the general purposes and functions that we aimed for!
  • We challenged ourselves a lot with this hackathon project by experimenting with new programming languages and APIs.

What we learned

  • How to call tricky APIs like Auth0 authentication API
  • How to create a beautiful, dynamic web application using Javascript

What's next for FineSpine

  • Implement a Chrome extension version of the web application for more convenient use
