Inspiration

During our middle and high school years, our teachers would encourage us to perform community service. But as teenagers and young adults, we did not have the resources, experience, or confidence to find community service on our own.

What it does

It is a web app that allows people to host community service events, such as food banks, school events, and more, which can be easily accessed by the user. The user would be able to RSVP to the event with a click allowing them to join without any excessive work. The main purpose of this webpage is to allow a seamless transition between hosting and joining an event because being a good person should not have to be difficult.

How we built it

We used React, with JavaScript/HTML/CSS, to create the web page. We were able to implement Auth0 in the front end. Moreover, we used Springboot, in association with Java, to create our database which runs on MongoDB which stores all user and event info.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was getting Auth0 to run. We spent half of our time in the hackathon debugging and testing Auth0 as it was different from what we had learned before. It has multiple templates for several methods of implementation that heavily differ from each other. We were unable to connect the auth0 authentication from the frontend to backend initially and had spend a generous amount of time trying to solve it. In the end, we changed the method several times, until we were able to come up with a solution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the biggest things that we're proud of was creating the project idea itself. It is a personal issue that has affected us for a long time. We believe that people want to be helpful, but when they lack the resources to exercise that, then all of our talents are left behind.

What we learned

We learned how to create a more reasonable expectation for our projects. We had a lot of ideas that we wanted to implement, but we were not prepared for the struggles that we were going to face. There was a lot of feature creep, in part of our ambition and inability to predict the uncertain difficulties in front of us. We were able to manage and change our plans, but it was an important lesson that we will not forget.

What's next for Find Your Community

We want to realize the lost ambition that we were not able to add to our project. There are so many more features that can make this application responsive like making the application mobile-friendly, adding more features regarding event description, and allowing a greater degree of freedom to event organizers. We want to set a more reasonable goal for the coming time and improve this project to a higher degree.
