FinCarta: Bringing Encarta Back to Life for Financial Education

Inspiration

We were inspired by the Retro Remix theme and the question: "How can we reimagine old applications in the age of AI?"

When we researched iconic software from the past, Microsoft Encarta stood out as a perfect example of an application that made learning feel like an adventure. Its trusted encyclopedia experience, interactive design, and structured approach to education were revolutionary for its time.

Looking at financial education today, we saw the same problems Encarta solved decades ago: overwhelming content, no clear learning path, and intimidating interfaces that scare away beginners.

We realized that what made Encarta special could revolutionize financial literacy in 2025. The challenge was clear: bring back the magic of Encarta, but upgrade it with modern AI to tackle the financial literacy crisis.

What it does

FinCarta is an AI-powered financial education platform that reimagines Microsoft Encarta for modern finance learning. We offer two complementary modes:

🔍 Reference Mode: Users can instantly search any financial topic and get AI-powered summaries at three difficulty levels (beginner/intermediate/advanced), complete with voice assistance and Wikipedia-powered content.

🎓 Learn Mode: A structured 11-step roadmap guides users from budgeting basics to advanced tax optimization, featuring gamified progress tracking, and interactive quizzes.

The platform combines nostalgic Windows 95-style UI with cutting-edge AI to make financial education accessible, engaging, and personalized for everyone.

How we built it

Frontend: Built with Next.js 15 and TypeScript for performance and type safety, styled with Tailwind CSS 4 for rapid development.

AI Integration:

Google Gemini 2.5 Flash powers content summarization and quiz generation
ElevenLabs provides natural voice synthesis for accessibility
Real-time Wikipedia API integration for comprehensive content

User Experience:

Framer Motion for smooth animations
Radix UI + shadcn/ui for accessible components
localStorage for progress tracking and personalization
Authentic Encarta-inspired design system

Architecture: RESTful API design with separate endpoints for search, summarization, and voice synthesis, deployed on Vercel for global accessibility.

Challenges we ran into

AI Integration & Content Quality:

Making AI summaries distinct across difficulty levels took multiple iterations
Implementing finance relevance detection to filter out non-financial content

User Experience Polish: Retro UI implementation was surprisingly complex:

Slider jittering and font rendering issues required multiple fixes
Scrollbar appearance shifts and navigation bugs needed systematic debugging

Feature Integration:

ElevenLabs voice synthesis integration had timing and browser compatibility challenges
Roadmap navigation and quiz system required extensive testing to ensure proper article mapping
AI assistant context handling needed refinement for better conversation flow

What we learned

AI is a powerful educational tool when properly integrated - it can personalize content, generate assessments, and provide accessibility features that traditional platforms can't match.

Nostalgia has real value in UX design - users immediately understand and trust familiar interfaces, making complex topics feel approachable.

Financial literacy is a systemic problem that requires both individual empowerment and systemic solutions. Our platform addresses the individual side by making education accessible and engaging.

Rapid prototyping with modern tools (Next.js, Tailwind, AI APIs) allows for incredibly fast iteration and feature development.
