FinLitFun is a turn-based simulation game teaching financial literacy where the goal is to retire as early as possible while maximizing player happiness, health, and personal finances. The game gives inspirational nods to BitLife and Oregon Trail where players start with a randomly generated player or with custom game settings where they take on the journey of life, being forced to make critical career, financial, and personal decisions that can have long-lasting effects, which can even make or break your story.
The game aims to teach these key personal finance concepts:
- Budgeting
- Debt and asset management
- Credit scores
- Retirement planning
- Importance of emergency funds
How we built it
For this project, we decided to build our game in Python using the pygame library and storing user and game data in JSON.
Pygame is an open-source library that expands upon the Simple DirectMedia Layer library and provides common abstractions for multi-media applications, like video games.
What's Next?
We plan to continue development for our project after the hackathon ends, and hope to eventually release the game as a mobile app!
