Inspiration
The moment our team lay our eyes upon the bounty of Blahaj's on the MLH livestream, our hearts were captivated. Blahaj is all the inspiration anyone needs, and it's sad that his livelihood is under threat by unparalleled pollution and shark hunting.
What it does
In Filter Frenzy, Blahaj fights back! Play as Blahaj as he swims swiftly through the waters, cleaning and protecting his home for himself and his fishy friends.
How we built it
Filter Frenzy is a browser game built with Phaser.io, a JavaScript framework for mobile and web game development. Our webapp is deployed on Netlify.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into included setting up the physics for the game correctly and randomizing the plastic and trash placement properly. Additionally, we tried to use some more complicated class configurations within the Phaser.io project structure for splitting scenes, which didn't end up working in our timeframe.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Contributing to the fight for a greener planet is self-satisfaction in itself, but knowing that we're sending Blahaj specifically to a cleaner home really takes the cake. Learning how to make a game and having it work is pretty cool as well as most of us had never done any kind of game development before.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working with JavaScript, HTML, asset design in Illustrator, as well as the tools used for making modern web games.
What's next for Filter Frenzy
Upcoming features we can add include a public leaderboard, hunting boats that follow the shark, and level progression.
