Inspiration

As we dove into finding solutions for struggling groups of people, we thought of our own parents who divulge the many struggles they are currently facing in this new stage of life. Something we found the most prevalent and hardly explored deals with the complexities that come with the transition in taking care of one's parents. The Middle Aged Child Parent: These adults are living in the sandwich years; they juggle both the responsibilities that come with having their own children, work, and now taking care of their parents. Often times they cannot financially or mentally afford to take care of their parents physically so their parents are living on their own. They still worry about their parent's physical and emotional well being, and wish they could find a better way to monitor and take care of them while being physically distant and busy.
The Fiercely Independent Parent: These parents have grown up with the capability of heaving relying on themselves, so when their body can no longer physically keep up they feel strange asking for a care taker and loosing their independence. This can also be because of the fear of burdening their children and being more of a stress. How might we help adults better understand and support their elderly parents in enhancing their health and happiness without feeling overwhelmed? [ENTER...] FamLY : An app that serves as the connection between these two groups, providing answers to the uncertainty of how an adult child can take care of their parents while being separated and juggling multiple responsibilities. As well as enabling the elderly parents to still exercise their independence. Using smart watch technology and ily (standing for I Love You and completing the rest of you Fam-ily) an AI voice assistant.

What it does

Issue 1: Taking care of parents while being separated (results in hard to get health information,
Smart Watch Data collection provides real time health data collected from parents vitals (heart rate, blood pressure, activity, sleep etc.) Synced upcoming events alleviate the anxiety in not knowing what is going on health wise for their parent Documents tab that provides necessary health information about the parent for the child's knowledge (health insurance, conditions, allergies, doctors, doctors contact info, current medication/dosage). Documents tab also provides Issue 2: Taking care of parents when already overwhelmed (results in forgetfulness/worried about forgetting) Notification function is an easy way to remind them in their business Option for voice to read updates outloud feeds the parent information to the child without going through the trouble to search for it Also a way for them to multitask but still be in the know Issue 3: Making sure parents still have their independence (without it, can result in conflict between the two, make it as natural/intuitive for the elderly parent) Geared the check in aspect on the smartwatch to a daily documentation/journal of their life so it may be more attractive for them to do instead of just a way for your kid to stalk you Did this by having selfie/video portion and prompting of what they did that day Designed to be more of a conversation between ily which makes the check in and question features easier/more intuitive for the elderly parent Notifications sent to their apple watch allows them to have the independent responsibility of taking their own medication but not a point that they will forget The free will to ask ily questions maintains this independence as they can still receive factual information on their own When faced with conflict the child can ask ily for guidance on how to address their parents

How we built it

Link to research process and findings: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rfMLe_m1yY5RsSvucbo5ZPz7tZrIw_-PCN5Tp3LjeI4/edit?usp=sharing Brainstorming Design Jam of different areas of uncertainty + ways to integrate new modality Settled on Health/Well Being topic and brainstormed issues we have witnessed to close ones Created pain points, needs, and solution features for our problem Research Created survey + interview questions and collected data Created competitive analysis to decide on what features to differentiate our app Looked through articles to gain more insights on target audience Revised pain points and needs Created User Person to identify exact audience + problem Creation Logo + ily assistant sketching on paper Branding, color scheme, style reference Lofi in figma for watch screen + phone app Hifi creation, revising lofi Prototyping Iteration Revising color palette to match apps vision of friendliness but trust/professionalism Brainstorm and iterate our key features that we want to implement into our app. Iterate multiple rounds of user flows, lofi wireframes, hifi wireframes.

Challenges we ran into

Really understanding the prompt and incorporating our individual experiences and perspectives into a cohesive, impactful project. Coming to a consensus on what target audience and problem we want to hone in on Narrowing down our ideas into the main features for our project

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Thought till our brains hurt and or melted 50% of the process was built of off brainstorming problems we were passionate about solving, researching what the general opinions on the problems were and what existing solutions could we tailor to be improved We really racked our brains on how we could combine features, and how features should flow intuitively Ran into many “OH I forgot/didn’t think about that” roadblocks but talked them out and came to a consensus as a team always tying back to the vision/mission we have for this app Balancing communication, mutual support, and constructive discussions! Always had helping others at the forefront Sticking till the end Everyone remained focused the whole time Learning a lot from one another Creating a project we're all proud of despite the stress, lack of sleep, and temporary setbacks!

What we learned

Strong Solidified Problem/solution from Research+Brainstorming > detailed/beautiful Hifi Taking our time to flesh out what to the tea our problem is and how exactly to solve it is important Documenting all of these decisions to ensure everyone is on the same page (there’s so much going on in all of our heads it's easy to forget or misinterpret) Deciding what features to sacrifice When choosing what aspects to take out we were very split as we found aspects like having the parent/child bond more emotionally, providing information on nearby clinics/services, and or focusing on getting their parents to keep up social wellbeing were areas we needed to sacrifice I still feel like we incorporated a full amount of features and feel that we have learned to really narrow down to what we would be the most happiest creating and then from there drawing more features if time is allotted Not everything we think of needs to be a yes and added right away!

What's next for FamLY

Fleshing out certain feature choices further Like what would happen in a scenario where a parent's vitals were jeopardized, could there be something that could guide the parents into what they could do? Could AI be the one to fill in all the information from being synced by medical officials so kids or parents don’t have to manually put it in to be kept for documentation? In general, spending more time on iteration that would be best for users Could there be a way that both ends send check-ins with each other so the connection can grow stronger? We are planning on adding features that could analyze the physical data to predict their emotions to give them better suggestions. We would also like to add a call feature to directly contact either elder parents or 911 for emergencies, streamlining the process and allowing users to focus their attention on being with their loved ones.
