Inspiration
Shiba Inus are very stubborn escape artists.
What it does
Uses WiFi as a short range radio for coarse location. Compared to the existing approaches, this is much more power efficient than GPS and can leverage existing infrastructure unlike Bluetooth.
How we built it
We used Node.js, Google Cloud Platform (Google Compute Engine), and Particle for IoT.
Challenges we ran into
Had numerous issues getting Qualcomm Dragonboard to update, ended up switching to Particle. Could not use SSH on Stetson_Guest WiFi.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The proof of concept works: it detects when it changes networks and uses this to notify the backend API, which then determines the location of the device by tracing the origin of the request.
What we learned
IoT - Particle API Google Cloud Platform
What's next for Fetch
From a technical / business point of view, this can be extended beyond pets to track just about anything that only requires coarse location.
