Inspiration

Thousands of food products are wasted daily at the end of the day. Maybe it is a misprint on a chocolate bar, the tomato is not as red as the rest, or not all the products were sold at the end of the day, food is more often than not wasted for no reason other than aesthetics or fear of not being sued. This problem of food waste is especially prevalent in large cities such as Ottawa. We wanted to create a platform to reduce or eliminate this issue in our community.

What it does

Feedia is a web app designed to connect people in need of food with food that would have been wasted. It is designed to bring people together like a social media platform, hence the name of the project. Users will first sign up to be a business or a person in need of food, known as a “Foodie”. If they choose business, they will be directed to create a profile where they enter their personal info including their phone number and location, as well as post their products on the platform and availability for pickup. If the user chooses buyer, they will come to a page to search for nearby food using filters such as dietary restrictions, location, and budget. People in need of food will be able to select a product they want and communicate directly with the business to arrange a pickup.

How we built it

We wrote all the code in the repl.it IDE using HTML, css, and javascript.

Challenges we ran into

Creating a user-freindly interface was difficult because our web-app has so many components. We had a lot of things to create and include, hence making them all look aesthetically pleasing was a challenge. The positioning of the buttons and elements was the most crucial aspect of this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finishing this project in such a short timeframe, even though we had many challenges with the interface and graphics. We are also very proud of the concept- we hope that this small step makes a difference in the lives of hungry people all over Ontario

What we learned

Everything has limitations- including specific languages, tools and more. Plans can change- it is important to be flexible and not hold on to specific plans. Keep things simple- it is not realistic to achieve so many things within such a short deadline.

What's next for Feedia

We hope to continue working on this app and flesh it out some more. At some point, when it is fully functional and has advanced features, we may release it.
