Inspiration
Food insecurity is defined as the disruption of food intake because of lack of money and other resources Risk: Adults who are food insecure may be at an increased risk for a variety of negative health outcomes. Like obesity, chronic disease. One fact is that the lack of food skills or shopping behaviors are not the problem. Food insecurity in Canada is tightly linked to income. As the research graph indicated that households with below $10,000 have the highest food insecurity. The financial constraint caused low-income households to hardly afford fresh and healthy produce. The main reason for the high cost of groceries is not just to produce, but the packaging, labor and logistic costs. This is Where FarmUp comes in.
The stark difference in costs for organic and nutritious produce & poultry versus unhealthy, quick junk food inspired us to build FarmUp. It is a platform that we hope will help reduce food wastage all the while promoting healthier lifestyles.
Our aim is to take away the middlemen & added costs by allowing farmers to directly sell their affordable, organic and healthy harvest to consumers in their area.
What it does
FarmUp is a web-based platform that offers customers a channel to connect with local farms and get direct access to fresher and affordable food.
How we built it
UI/UX: Figma. Frontend: ReactJS. Backend: Python, FastAPI
Challenges we ran into
The main challenges we ran into were deciding the logistics of keeping costs low in this business. We had a lot of ideas and visions but not all were feasible. Through the design and implementation process, we eradicated the obstacles to a more viable outcome.
Some of the developers had to learn the React framework on the spot. Due to differences in learning pace and level of expertise, we could only execute a portion of the app.
This is Ania's first time using Figma and the biggest challenge is to learn and complete the design in one day. But she learned quickly and made amazing work, and she can now use this UI design tool with confidence.
What's next for FarmUp
In the future, we are looking forward to partnering with companies like Deliveroo, HelloFresh to improve and expand our business. Meanwhile, we hope FarmUp becomes a global platform all the while raising awareness and caution for food wastage and sustainable living.
