Inspiration

  • Middlemen Biggest Obstacle in Increasinq Farmers Income
  • Despite implementing plans for increasing farmers income, the government is unable to provide the benefits to farmers as middlemen take away a major chunk of profits.
  • Punjab farmers complain that their income has declined due to shifting from paddy to other crops.
  • In Punjab there is no provision for sale of crops other than paddy and wheat.
  • As a result, farmers are forced to sell the produce to middlemen at low prices.

What it does

FarmerG eliminates middlemen, ensuring fair prices and maximizing farmers' income, addressing income disparity in Indian agriculture. Despite the presence of several online applications, limited digital literacy, trust/reliability issues, and market linkages / demand supply dynamics hinder the effective utilization of these online platforms for farmers in India.

How we built it

FarmerG consists of two interfaces, one for farmers and one for businesses. As a registered farmer, users have access to a listing section. In this section, farmers input crop name, quantity, price to sell, sowing and harvest dates (ensuring crop freshness based on physiological maturity, as per IRRI. Reliability issue checked.). These steps are voice-assisted. The platform also includes a dashboard that tracks past transactions and current orders. Furthermore, a section displays the latest market scenarios and demand-supply dynamics, sourcing information from organizations like ICAR, NIAM, and COA, providing valuable insights for crop planning. For businesses, there is a shopping section where they can search for crops and view a list of farmers selling them, along with harvest accuracy based on sowing date, location, and price. The cart section allows them to preview their order, and a comprehensive dashboard provides access to past transactions and the ability to rate deliveries for customer testimonials. Additionally, the platform offers direct chatting and video calling features for clarity between buyers and sellers. Finally, FarmerG acts as a secure payment gateway, ensuring safe transactions and maintaining transaction records

Challenges we ran into

  • The biggest hurdle was to make the site convenient for farmers since majority of the farmers are technologically inefficient. This was solved by making the site multilingual and providing drop-down for each category for the farmers.
  • The second problem was to validate the harvesting date entered by the farmers. This was solved by taking three factors into consideration, first being crop production statistics of every state, then crop period, location and adding them into database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Unlike our competitors, we support farmers by not charging a subscription fee. Farmers can choose a premium membership, which offers enhanced visibility and marketing support. The FarmerG platform allows agri-businesses to reach a relevant audience through targeted advertising. Providing insights into crop trends, market demand, and consumer preferences, aggregated and anonymized data is monetized for researchers, government agencies, and market analysis firms. Through partnerships with restaurants or delivery services, farm visits, events, and exclusive produce deliveries can be organized, generating revenue.
