Inspiration

We were inspired to assist students with ADHD so we can provide them with the opportunities to succeed and flourish in their academic and professional journey.

What it does

Our app allows students with ADHD to complete tasks that will over time prompt them to become more aware and work towards relieving their symptoms.

How we built it

We built the app at first on flutter, but then later designed a UI on MIT App Inventor. We coded the functions screen by screen independently, before using a storage mechanism, called tinyDB, to transfer data between screens to provide the user an experience tailored to their symptoms and treatment.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenges that we faced while developing our app included having difficulty in storing things on multiple levels (globally, locally, etc.) and debugging/testing to ensure that the app had full functionality. By collaborating with one another, we were able to overcome this challenge as a new set of eyes can look for small details. By working through this challenge, we were able to understand the significance of collaboration in software development. Combining unique perspectives allowed us to integrate a much more efficient solution when compared to what we would have developed if we worked individually.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Throughout the course of this competition experience, we found that we’ve grown both as programmers and as individuals. We’ve been able to build and develop our programming skills by brainstorming technical ideas, collaborating with one another, and by researching cutting-edge treatments of ADHD to make our software more efficient. We are additionally very proud of the fact that we were constantly willing to learn from one another and be flexible with integrating new ideas as we gained more information.

What we learned

For the experience as a whole, we learned how to better manage our time by setting due dates for each member, and we explored how to efficiently split up responsibilities for us to be able to put in equal effort into this project. As for the coding portion, we learned that applying coding constructs to several scenarios, as well as taking storage into consideration, is essential in maintaining a strong and reliable function of the programming.

What's next for Evolving Focus

We plan to expand our scope and impact of Evolving Focus by implementing this app not only in our local community, but hopefully all throughout the state. When we are able to program more complex code to harness the app’s full potential to evolve with the user’s growing ability to focus.
