Inspiration

Our inspiration for this project was the concept of "don't yuck my yum". Even as children growing up as a cultural minority, many of us felt judged and shamed for bringing foods from our culture to school for lunch. Hurtful comments like "that smells!" or "EW, what is that?!" have been all too common. Some of the seeps into our adult lives and influences people's openness to trying new things. Cultural erasure, particularly in the context of food and recipes, is a significant issue that often leads to the loss of unique culinary traditions and practices. We strive to create an open conversation about these foods, free of judgement. Instead of being ashamed, we have the right to feel proud to share our culture through the universal language of food.

What it does

There are three main pages; The discover page, the explore page, and the saved page.

  • Discover Page: This page categorizes the foods by culture where you can click on each one and learn about its origins, its place in the culture, variations on the food, and also where to eat or how to make it.
  • Explore Page: This is for the visual people. On this page you will be able to see a world map, within that map, you can hover over various stars and find out more information about the food within that country.
  • Saved Page: This page is to collect foods from the site and save them to reference later.

How we built it

We built our prototype using Figma, and started building it HTML/CSS/JS. We are trying to implement Cohere API to help generate some of the information for the individual web pages.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into was ideating for this project and then implementing the Cohere API. We overcame these by doing a strong ideation period and coming up with many ideas that we could iterate on.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take immense pride in the fact that, despite the challenges we encountered, we managed to have a great time. Our resilient vibes-based mentality served as our guiding force throughout the 24 hours, ensuring that we not only faced obstacles but also embraced the journey with a positive and enjoyable spirit.

What we learned

We learned that teamwork makes the dream work and that good vibes and making new friends and connections is one of the most important human experiences.

What's next for everyone eats !

In the future, we would like to include a feature for users to be able to submit their own foods, especially those that may not be very well known. Like languages, many traditional foods and family recipes can become lost, and our goal for the future of everyone eats ! is to preserve this part of people's culture.
