Inspiration
Attending such a big university makes it hard for many students to keep track of events they are interested in. When searching for events, students are often met with long lists of events which may appear overwhelming. Because of this, we created EventTerp to make it easier for students to find events relating to their interests, reducing their chances of missing another event.
What it does
EventTerp connects UMD students to a variety of events happening both on campus and off campus. Students are prompted to enter their interests from a list of options and are shown events relating to their interests. EventTerp allows the students to choose whether or not they would like to add these events to their personal calendar which is displayed in the app.
How we built it
We began by creating a detailed prototype on Figma. We then set up a repository on GitHub, allowing us to work on our own screens which eventually came together to form a full app. To begin coding, we first had to install all of the necessary packages on react native. We then began coding our screens, collaborating and communicating along the way.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges setting up GitHub as many of us had never done a group project of this nature We also ran into challenges deciding how to import events into the app and how to keep the app updated over time. We initially thought of using an API that already contained UMD events, but we could not find one of our likings.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able learning 4 languages and frameworks in a short amount of time. We also all managed our studies as well as the coding portion of the project.
What we learned
We learned to work as a team over virtual platforms. Aside from the new languages we learned, we also learned to manage our time in a way that contributes to the team's benefits.
What's next for EventTerp
In the future we would like to add features including, allowing event organizers to add events to the app, allowing students to link events to their Google and Apple Calendars instead of being restricted to the calendar in the app, incorporating AI in suggesting student events, and allowing students to upvote events to promote awareness (more likes —> higher event presence).
