Inspiration

Keeping track of university events can be tedious and overwhelming when information is scattered across multiple social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Discord. Many students miss out on opportunities because they don't know where to look, and important deadlines can get lost in the flood of content on their feeds. FeedMeEvents aims to simplify event discovery by creating a centralized platform that aggregates all upcoming university events in one place.

What it does

FeedMeEvents is a centralized event feed platform for UNSW students.

  • Users can subscribe to societies they’re interested in.
  • The platform then generates a personalized feed of upcoming events and deadlines based on their subscriptions.
  • Students receive event reminders so they never miss an important deadline. This eliminates the need to search through multiple platforms and ensures that students stay updated with society events effortlessly.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

  • Time Constraint: With only 1.5 days, we had to prioritize core features and cut out extra functionalities.
  • Filtering System: Implementing real-time filtering based on user preferences was more complex than expected.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a working prototype within the time limit.
  • Created a functional personalized event feed based on user subscriptions.
  • Designed a clean and user-friendly UI that allows easy event discovery.
  • Learned how to efficiently structure data in Firebase for dynamic event updates.

What we learned

Scoping a project is crucial – our initial idea was too broad, so we had to narrow it down to fit within the time constraints.

What's next for FeedMeEvents

  • Adding Webhooks: Automatically fetch events from UNSW society Facebook pages to update the event feed in real time.
  • Authentication & Personalization: Let users log in, subscribe to societies, and save preferences for a fully customized experience.
  • Push Notifications: Implement reminders so users get notified about important deadlines and upcoming events.
  • Society Dashboard: Allow societies to submit their events directly instead of relying on manual input.
