Inspiration
The inspiration for Eternal AI arose from the challenges faced by communities of color, who often encounter limited access to dermatological care. Darker skin tones are prone to specific skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, keloids, and eczema, yet there is a shortage of specialists trained to treat these issues.
The fact that only 3-5% of dermatologists in the U.S. identify as Black or Latinx presents a significant problem for communities of color, as it limits access to culturally competent care for skin conditions that disproportionately affect these populations.
In Nigeria and across Africa, where only 0.2 dermatologists serve every 100,000 people, accessing care becomes even more difficult, especially for individuals in rural areas. Patients must travel long distances and bear high costs to see dermatologists who are mostly concentrated in urban centers.
By leveraging Google Gemini AI, Eternal AI aims to provide accessible, affordable, and immediate skin care, empowering people of color to manage their skin health without the delays or financial strain. Our solution is designed to bridge the gap, addressing the unique needs of these communities and reducing the long-term impact of untreated skin conditions.
What it does
Eternal AI is an AI-powered dermatology platform that offers instant skin condition analysis and affordable telemedicine consultations. Users input their symptoms, upload images of their skin conditions, and provide relevant background information, such as medical history and lifestyle factors.
The AI, then analyzes this data to generate a preliminary diagnosis. This information is then compiled and sent to a dermatologist, making telemedicine consultations more efficient and cost-effective. Additionally, users have the option to participate in medical case studies conducted by students worldwide, receiving detailed analyses for free while contributing to the advancement of dermatological research.
Dermatologists who share cultural backgrounds with their patients are better equipped to understand the specific skin concerns and conditions common in people of color, leading to more accurate diagnoses and tailored treatments. Additionally, AI systems that are tuned to be culturally sensitive can further enhance skin health care by addressing the unique needs of these communities.
AI-Powered Diagnosis: Utilizes Google Gemini’s advanced AI capabilities to analyze images of skin conditions, cross-referencing them with a wealth of dermatological data to deliver accurate, real-time diagnoses.
Telemedicine Integration: Connects users with licensed dermatologists who are also people of culture that understand, diagnose or better understand darker shades of skin better through virtual consultations, reducing the cost of appointments and making dermatological care accessible to people in remote and underserved areas.
Case Study Opportunities: Offers users the option to have medical students worldwide review their cases for free, allowing for deeper analysis and contributing to both education and medical research.
Patient Data Compilation: Compiles user-provided data such as symptoms, medical history, and images, creating comprehensive reports for dermatologists to review, streamlining the consultation process.
Skin Health Education: Provides users with valuable knowledge on maintaining healthy skin, offering guidance on preventive care and daily routines.
Suggested Products: Recommends personalized skin care products based on the user’s skin type and condition, helping users choose the right treatments.
Possible Causes: Educates users on the possible causes of their skin issues, offering insights into lifestyle, environmental, or genetic factors.
Possible Skin Diseases: Informs users about potential skin conditions related to their symptoms, helping them understand what they might be experiencing and when to seek professional help.
How we built it
AI Integration: Google Gemini API is used to power the AI diagnosis engine, analyzing user-uploaded images and cross-referencing them with a vast dataset of dermatological conditions to provide accurate results.
Data Processing and Compilation: The system uses Google Gemini's AI capabilities to process and compile user-provided data such as symptoms, medical history, and skin images into detailed reports for doctors.
Educational Content: Developed a resource library powered by Google Gemini to provide personalized educational material on skin care, potential causes, suggested products, and possible skin conditions.
Recommendation Engine: Created a recommendation system that suggests personalized skin care products based on the AI analysis of user profiles and skin condition data.
Cloud Deployment: The solution is hosted on Google Cloud for scalability, performance, and seamless integration with Google APIs and services.
Technology Stack: Built using JavaScript, React for frontend user interfaces, HTML, and CSS for layout and design.
Challenges we ran into
Fine-Tuning AI for Skin Condition Recognition: Adapting Google Gemini to accurately diagnose a wide variety of skin conditions proved challenging. We needed to ensure the model could distinguish between subtle differences in symptoms and adapt to diverse skin types and conditions across various demographics.
Optimizing Conversational AI: Developing a virtual dermatologist capable of engaging in meaningful and accurate conversations involved refining natural language processing and context understanding. Ensuring the AI could provide relevant responses and handle a wide range of dermatological queries was a significant hurdle.
Handling Diverse Data Inputs: Users provided varying levels of detail and types of data, from symptom descriptions to medical history. We had to create a flexible system that could process and integrate this diverse information effectively for accurate diagnosis and recommendations.
User Engagement and Retention: Maintaining user engagement required creating a compelling experience that not only provided accurate diagnoses but also encouraged users to return. We focused on improving the user interface and experience to ensure ongoing interaction and satisfaction.
