Equimed
Inspiration
… Access to healthcare and medical facilities is a basic human right, however in today’s society this is still an issue where significance amounts of inequity is observed
What it does
EquiMed is a solution which allows patients, doctors and corporations to have a win win scenario in terms of fair and equitable access to healthcare. Patients can use equimed to schedule consultations with doctors after sending a request. Doctors are able to decide their own rates and get paid with micropayment depending on how many minutes the consultation lasted. Finally, corporations are able to donate to this platform by using our interface and this will reduce the effective rate that the patient has to pay for a consultation.
How we built it
We used cockroachDB for the backend database, Google cloud functions for the backend, Figma for design, react native and expo for the app, Polar and metamask for micropayments.
Challenges we ran into
We initially had a team of 4 on campus, but two members left due to prior engagements. We had to reform a team with about 10 hours left, and start a lot of the work from scratch. We also found out that micropayments is next to impossible using conventional currency, therefore we switched to cryptocurrency for this part of the project. Due to time constraints, the app connectivity is not the best but we are hoping to iterate this further.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite having to reform a team more than halfway into the hackathon, we still managed to pull off a project which was our goal all along.
What we learned
The medical industry has a lot of bias and inequity baked in, and there is significant work to be done in this regard
What's next for EquiMed
More robust prototype and hopefully funding!
