Inspiration

I wanted to track my carbon emissions. But no matter how hard I tried to find an app, every option I came across felt static and forgettable! There was nothing out there that was interactive, engaging, or made me want to return the next day. That’s when I realized something: sustainability isn’t just about policies or whitepapers. It starts with individual impact.

So I got to thinking. I browsed forums, studied behavioral psychology, and explored how gamification could drive real-world change. The more I explored, the more I felt this inner flame grow, a desire to build something that made people like me feel excited to live sustainably:)

And that’s how EnviroX was born: a platform designed to make low-carbon living fun, social, and part of your lifestyle.

What it does

EnviroX is a mobile app that transforms sustainability from a passive concept into an active, engaging lifestyle. It uses AI and computer vision to estimate a user’s carbon footprint based on daily photo posts, but for climate awareness. If a user’s emissions are high, the app instantly flags it and suggests personalized, low-carbon alternatives to improve their habits!

But EnviroX goes beyond just tracking. It motivates. Users build streaks, get to compete on leaderboards amongst friends, and receive weekly "EnviroWrapped" (inspired from SpotifyWrapped) summaries to visualize their progress and impact. The app also connects users to sustainability events happening nearby, reinforcing that real change isn’t just individual, it’s community-driven.

This app was built out of a personal need. I didn’t just want big showy numbers, I wanted something that made climate action feel real, interactive, and worth coming back to!

How we built it

EnviroX was built entirely in Figma. However, it wasn’t just about placing buttons on a screen. It was a long and tireless process of bringing an idea to life through intentional design! I spent hours researching UX principles, experimenting with different layouts, and asking for iterative feedback to make sure every screen felt intuitive, engaging, and aligned with our mission.

Designing an app that feels both playful and purposeful required balancing visual storytelling with behavioral nudges, gamified elements, and accessibility. Every feature, from the carbon feedback interface to the events dashboard and leaderboard, was crafted to simulate a real product experience.

Although it was challenging, seeing the final product come alive was so worth it!

Challenges we ran into

Working in Figma sounds simple, until you actually try to build something real ;-;. At first, I struggled to understand the difference between things like frames vs. components, or how auto layout even worked. But soon, I realized that Figma has so much nuance that it’s not just design, it’s structure, logic, and interaction all layered together!

There were moments where it felt overwhelming. I’d fix one thing, and another would break. I’d receive so much feedback that I wasn’t sure what to change first. There were honestly days I felt like throwing it all away and starting over. But I pushed through, and every iteration made the app more alive, more intuitive, and more impactful.

This process taught me that "with great UX comes great pain". But that pain is what pushed me to not just persevere, but to make sure my app was never “just okay.” It had to feel right, look right, and function in a way that made people want to come back, because that’s what real impact needs :D

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Seeing this idea come to life is something I’m really proud of. I started with a simple goal: to track my emissions in a way that actually felt engaging, and ended up creating a full user experience that’s both purposeful and personal!

What we learned

  • I learned that design isn’t just how it looks, it’s how it works, and how it makes people feel!
  • Sustainability is much more of a mindset than just policies and goals :)

What's next for EnviroX

The next step is to bring EnviroX to life through development: turning my current prototype into a fully functional app! I’m also looking forward to exploring potential collaborations with sustainability communities to expand its reach. But most of all, I’m excited to see it in the hands of real users and to watch people start making low-carbon living part of their daily routine!
