Inspiration
Vaping has become a lot more prevalent among young people in the past few years and it has become a major part of high schoolers' lives whether or not they choose to vape. Many people are unaware of the environmental impact that vaping comes with, and most of the people who do vape don't dispose of them properly. Disposing of e-cigarettes the wrong way can release heavy metals, liquid nicotine, lead, mercury, and microplastics into waterways and can damage environments and animals.
What it does
The website is used to spread awareness about the environmental effects of improper disposal of e-cigarettes. It describes the detrimental impact of improper disposal of vapes, instructions on how to dispose of them, recent news on the issue, and a word search activity that includes important terms related to vape waste.
How we built it
Originally we used Google Sites and we switched to using JavaScript. We did a lot of research on how people dispose of their vapes and the proper way to dispose of them that causes a significantly less amount of harm to the environment.
Challenges we ran into
Learning how to make a website and hosting it was difficult but with the help of mentors, we managed to make the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The word search with terms related to vape waste is really awesome. Transitioning from using Google Sites to React to make the website was a huge accomplishment and we're proud to have made it.
What we learned
We learned about the specific effects of vape waste on the environment and the safer way to dispose of them. We also learned about making a website.
What's next for EndVapeWaste
We think that adding a game about this issue would increase activity and bring more awareness, which would be the next step for EndVapeWaste.
