Inspiration In today’s digital design landscape, creativity and expression often require tools that allow users to explore artistic freedom in a fun and interactive way. I was inspired to build an add-on for Adobe Express that brings a touch of spontaneity and creativity to the platform. With the rise of abstract and digital art, I wanted to create something that adds dynamic, paint-splatter effects to designs—helping both casual and professional users bring their projects to life with vibrant colors and energy.

What it does This Adobe Express add-on, PastelSplash, allows users to add customizable, random paint splashes to their projects. Users can choose from a variety of soft, pastel color palettes and adjust brush sizes and opacity to create subtle or bold splashes. The add-on generates unique splatter patterns, giving users the flexibility to enhance their designs with a splash of creativity.

How I built it I built PastelSplash using HTML5 Canvas for the paint-splatter rendering and JavaScript to manage user inputs such as color selection, brush size, and splash opacity. The add-on integrates seamlessly with Adobe Express by utilizing their API, allowing users to create and customize splash effects directly within the platform. CSS was used to create an intuitive, colorful interface that enhances the user experience, while the JavaScript logic ensures that each splash effect is randomized and unique.

Challenges I ran into One of the biggest challenges I faced was ensuring that the splatter effects were visually appealing without overwhelming the design. Striking the right balance between randomness and control was key to giving users enough creative flexibility while ensuring the results didn’t detract from their work. Another challenge was managing performance when generating splashes at larger sizes and keeping the tool responsive within Adobe Express.

User Experience My focus for the user experience was on simplicity and fun. I wanted users to feel creative without needing a steep learning curve, so I designed an intuitive interface where users can easily select colors, adjust brush sizes, and see instant visual feedback on their changes. Additionally, I ensured that the splatter effects were customizable to suit both professional projects and more casual designs, making it accessible to a wide range of users.

What I learned I learned the importance of balancing creativity and control within design tools. It was a valuable experience to integrate a visual effect tool into a larger platform like Adobe Express while ensuring the add-on maintained high performance and simplicity. Additionally, I gained deeper insight into user interface design, particularly around ensuring that customization options were powerful but easy to use.

What’s next for the product In the future, I plan to expand PastelSplash by introducing more customization options such as different splash patterns, color gradients, and the ability to create splashes with more complex shapes. I also aim to optimize the performance further, especially for larger canvas sizes, and integrate additional features like undo/redo functionality for more control. Lastly, I hope to collaborate with Adobe Express to bring more dynamic, artistic tools to users and expand the possibilities of digital design creation.
