Inspiration

I live in a steel township in semi-rural India, blessed with an abundance of fertile soil. Many of us cultivate our own vegetables and fruits in our kitchen gardens. Often, we find ourselves with surplus produce—more than a single family can consume—which unfortunately leads to waste as it spoils.

To address this issue and promote environmental sustainability, we created Encash Your Garden. This platform helps us manage and utilize the excess produce by connecting us with people who need it. Since the produce is organic and fresh, it meets a significant demand for healthier food options in India.

Moreover since most people , in the towns of India don’t speak English, and in India local languages vary from state to state , the newcomers many a times are unable to mingle with the local population, in order to address this the project comes with a multilingual GenAI chatbot

Encash Your Garden not only reduces food wastage but also promotes a healthy lifestyle . By turning surplus garden produce into a valuable resource for the community, we contribute to a healthier India and make the most of our fertile kitchen gardens .

What It Does

Encash Your Garden is a web app where users can create an account and login to post pictures, videos, and documents of their produce and list items they want to sell. Users can follow kitchen gardeners and regular customers they like, comment on and like their posts. The seller can view post analytics, such as the number of impressions and views, and each person has a personal profile page.

Moreover, our web application is powered by a multilingual Generative AI chatbot supported by MISTRAL AI pipelined with IndicTrans2, capable of handling 22 Indic languages. This chatbot provides users with information on weather, tips for better plant growth, and other gardening advice in a language they are familiar with, catering to India's linguistic diversity. Additionally, the chatbot can generate creative and engaging marketing captions in local languages, helping sellers reach a wider audience even if they are not fluent in those languages.

How I built it

Frontend

  • Framework: ReactJS
  • UI Library: Material-UI (MUI)

Backend

  • Database: MongoDB
  • Backend Framework: ExpressJS

Chatbot Backend

  • Language: Python

Authentication

  • Method: JSON Web Tokens (JWT)

Challenges I ran into

During our participation in the MLH hackathon, we encountered several challenges:

  1. Ensuring Data Consistency: One of the initial challenges was ensuring that there were no inconsistencies in the LLMs (likely meanings) after pipelining to the Transformer . This required thorough testing and validation of data throughout the application.

  2. Full Stack Integration: Developing a full stack application for the first time was a significant challenge. It involved ensuring seamless integration between the frontend (built with ReactJS and Material-UI) and the backend (using MongoDB with ExpressJS), and implementing Python for the chatbot functionality.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Witnessing individuals come together to meet each other's needs on our platform is deeply fulfilling, reflecting our commitment to nurturing a culture of healthy garden utilization. Our platform has successfully united like-minded kitchen gardeners, enabling them to form a community where they can share thoughts, interact, and collectively benefit from their garden produce.

Moreover, developing a multilingual GenAI chatbot for Indian local languages stands as a significant achievement. This innovation has proven highly beneficial for the local Indian population, offering accessible and valuable information through advanced AI technology tailored to their linguistic preferences allowing Non-English speakers to benefit from Generative AI .

What I learnt

Throughout my journey with "Encash Your Garden," I've learned crucial lessons about cultivating a community-focused platform dedicated to sustainable gardening. I've prioritized balancing user convenience with environmental responsibility, ensuring my platform remains accessible while making a positive impact. My experience has highlighted the critical role of transparent communication and trustworthy interactions in fostering a strong sense of community among users. Additionally, preventing produce from rotting has been a significant focus, addressing food waste challenges. Addressing linguistic barriers has also been essential, as I strive to create inclusive features that facilitate seamless communication and collaboration among gardeners worldwide, thereby breaking down barriers and promoting global sustainability efforts.

What's next for Encash Your Garden

For "Encash Your Garden," this marks just the beginning of our journey . The future plans for the project consists of including details regarding nearby community-driven event initiatives like local seed exchanges, and implementing private calling and messaging. Leveraging computer vision to suggest optimal plant care practices, diagnose diseases, and recommend personalized garden layouts. Looking ahead, the aim is to enhance user engagement, broaden our community, and innovate further to empower gardeners worldwide. This journey exemplifies the commitment of "Encash Your Garden " to sustainability and inclusive gardening practices
