Inspiration
In times of crisis, people end up without the resources they need and without the tools to obtain them. Existing public infrastructure falls apart, and the best resource available is the others in your community.
What it does
Emergency Pals makes it easier to connect with your community and share resources during unprecedented events. For safety purposes, users login with Google accounts, and are then shown the resources that other people have, as well as submit their own resources.
How we built it
We used JavaScript (through the React library), HTML, and CSS for the main portion of the app, as well as node.js for the authentication and server functionality.
Challenges we ran into
None of us were entirely familiar with React, so we had to learn to use and navigate it. We also ran into issues with our formatting and style, and struggled to make our product as aesthetically appealing as we would have liked. When using GitHub, we also encountered problems with our merge conflicts, and had to learn to fix them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the designs and art we made for our app, as well as the functionality with adding new items, and the Google authentication. We also managed to accomplish a lot in a short time frame, which taught all of us that we are more capable than we realized.
What we learned
We all learned a lot about React and the basics of building a web app. We also learned how to integrate Google authentication into our web app, as well as increased our familiarity with GitHub and using the GitHub CLI.
What's next for Emergency Pals
In the future, we would like to introduce a location based system that connects you with people closer to you, as well as notifications for when new supplies are added and for when there is an emergency. We would also like to update our UI and UX to be more polished.
