Inspiration

EMergency COMmunications (EMCOM) was inspired by the need to bridge the gap left by the traditional emergency system that relies on telephones or cellphones. What if there is no cell reception in the area but internet access is easily available? This is where the web based EMCom Platform comes in to assist and complement the 911 Emergency System.EMCOM offers calling from the Web and provides status tracking between the dispatcher and the responders which could be Medical Services/ Law Enforcement/ Fire and Rescue or All.

What it does

EMCOM enables a person to call in for help via the web and get connected to a dispatcher that takes in the caller details and sends that information to the relevant responder. Once the responder receives the dispatch it appear on their Emergency Dispatch Board. The responders can view the details, acknowlege receipt and add status notes that the dispatcher can follow through to monitor progress on the case. Once the dispatcher has gone through the notes and are satisfied that the caller has been assisted and responded to, they can the click the "Confirm as Actioned" button.

How we built it

EMCOM uses WEBRTC technology for web calling. Its Signaling Server runs in a wavelength zone to enable faster communication and easy peer discovery between the dispatch client and the caller. The other half of the platform is a web app that runs on an ec2 instance hosted in a public subnet in an availability zone. The signalling server and the web app resources are all placed in one VPC. Accomplishments that we're proud of

A 5G AWS Wavelength powered Emergency Response option is now available, giving the public extended options to reach for help. Video calling also means that the dispatcher has an option to see and interpret the situation through the device camera.

What we learned

How AWS Wavelength can reduce the latency of video calls allowing quality conversations between the public and the emergency response services.

Potential Value

Emergency services can now be within the reach of any internet enabled device(Smart TV, Tablet, Phone, Smart Fridge, laptop or desktop computer). Camera access enables the dispatcher to interpret the situation accurately or see real time media feed. When Emcom is coupled with image recognition software or AI Face Detection, it could unlock valuable insights such as a sad face.

What's next for EmCom Platform

Adding more functionality and features such as SOS beacon and realtime location tracking
