Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project came from the fires that are currently wreaking havoc in California. We wanted to create and app that could be helpful to people who were affected, might be affected, or is just curious.
What it does
Ember aims to educate on the hazards of natural disasters and provide insights on selected regions such as total property damage or drought levels.
How we built it
We used Python and the Flask framework in the backend and React as the frontend. Plotly and REST-apis were used to gather data and create visuals that make it easy to digest and understand the data and trends.
Challenges we ran into
We were planning to create a completely interactive map where you can select a region on the map and the according information and insights would be updated based on the boundary that was picked. However, this proved to be too difficult for the time given, so we had to settle for a dumbed down version that was not as interactive as we had originally planned it to be.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of the things we were proud to accomplish was the data we received from the api's and mapping it onto the corresponding locations on the interactive map.
What we learned
We learned how to use React and become more proficient in visualizing data using Plotly.
What's next for Ember
Next up for Ember is implementing the fully interactive map, getting access to more robust datasets, and include information on more natural disasters.
