Inspiration
Homelessness can be both long-term and episodic. Many are families with children. The causes of homelessness includes anything from life changing or unplanned events, physical and mental disabilities to tragic life occurrences like the loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence and divorce. Many factors push people into living on the street. On the flip side, many people and organizations are willing to share resources or have a positive use for the skill-sets offered by the homeless if they can be connected to these individuals at a personal level. This project has been inspired with the success of the Sharing Economy and aims to eliminate homelessness by connecting these individuals to shared resources to help them through the transitionary period on the path to regaining employment and return to mainstream lives.
What it does
Its a Cloud app that allows those on the verge of homelessness to detail their circumstances and reach out to those that can help in any way possible by sharing their homes, beds, food and supplies. A person who is comfortable only taking in families or a shelter with limited room but willing to accommodate those with specific craftsmanship skills can selectively select those they want to help.
How we built it
We used the technologies Java, Android SDK and databases.
Challenges we ran into
Access to real data. WiFi connectivity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Strong Team collaboration.
What we learned
The Homelessness Agency Panel was very informative. SLU has a beautiful campus. Thank you SLU and all the great sponsors for arranging this and having us here.
