Inspiration
Once upon a time there was a children’s television show called Puddle Lane. Picture word cards were issued as a reading aid for young viewers of the show. The cards displayed words and pictures with the matching words.
What it does
Digital Word Cards takes the picture word card concept and displays cards and words for children to view, with the added feature of being able to test themselves with a text box entry box before moving through to the next available card.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS and Javascript in a static webpage. We used pure code. We planned to make improvements with Wix but ran out of time.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulty settling on a suitable idea with a scope we could work with quickly, at first. So we decided to work with this simple idea which over time could be extended. The key challenge with this project was correctly implementing the navigation of the cards.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have produced functional code in a short space of time, with a group made up of team members in different parts of the world (Britain, India and Pakistan) with different ideologies, methodologies and skill-sets.
What we learned
We learned to work together as a team, taking into account different skill-sets and time-zones. We learned new ways of generating ideas, and considering the feasibility of their scope.
What's next for Digital Word Cards
We would like to extend the features in the following ways: Allow for independent learning with the addition of voice recording to play at the request of a button. Provide a print view so that a relative or friend can print out cards for family who do not have electronic devices or internet access.
