INSPIRATION
According to Census 2011, India has 104 million older people (60+years), constituting 8.6% of total population. Cataract, Glaucoma and color blindness are very common in these age ranges. We wanted to create an app that targets this particular audience which is unable to make efficient use of mobiles and give them a simpler, more intuitive interface to work on. The actual inspiration for this app striked us when we saw an old man in our school’s building trying to figure out the simplest task of calling his son when he felt uneasy. This made us realize how much easier we could make the lives of our elders and people with a simple app.
EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW
Elder.ly is an app that uses a combination of bright, bold colors, intuitive one-click-to-anywhere interface, minimal design and customization options to cater to the needs of each and every person's requirements. It can be used by people with sensitive health conditions, with an emergency button that can immediately contact the emergency numbers, and hospitals nearby if need arises. Its interface can also be simplified to show content in Indian languages, English or just icons.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
- Simple interface which makes it easier to be used by people with less/no experience with using phones.
- Customizable emergency buttons that can call nearby hospitals, send out SOS messages etc.
- Customizable reminders that can remind about tasks, medicines, appointments, etc.
- Map interface to show location of home and other registered places.
- Emergency page shows important details about the phone’s owner, including but not limited to blood group, emergency contacts, and medical details.
WHAT SETS US APART ?
- Our minimal, one-click-to-anywhere interface with bold, bright colors and clear text that makes it very easy to use.
- Emergency and SOS buttons make it essential for risky areas or for people with sensitive health.
- The colors of the app will be totally customizable to suit people with color blindness, cataract or other eye diseases.
- The font will be customizable to show text in regional Indian languages or show only icons.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR Elder.ly?
We firmly believe that once completely developed, the app has the potential to help millions of people who are not fluent with using mobile phones. We plan to complete the app, make all the features originally planned available and make it even more efficient to use. We then plan to launch it out on the app store, while constantly working to make improvements and removing any bugs.
