Inspiration

This is idea has been going through the back of my mind since the COVID pandemic began. During online school, I was thinking about all the people that weren't getting the sufficient education they wanted. I used to look at the news and every once in a while, there would be a story on some kid who couldn't afford education during COVID. Then I thought, it would be a good idea to make a place where people could learn for free or at low prices.

What it does

It's a full-stack website that allows people to become sellers (using stripe) and then post their services for an hourly fee (if not free). Buyers can then select and tutor they want, send them an email, and the seller will contact them. Whenever they start a session, they must start the 1 hour timer on the website in order for it to keep track of the money due. When the hour is done, the buyer must pay the fee. We take 20% of it as a platform fee and give 3% to Stripe because we are using their service for all payments.

How I built it

I built it using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node JS). This would not have been possible without time management though. One of the biggest takeaways from this hackathon, something I will remember for my entire life.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into a lot of backend bugs along with front-end components not showing up. However, keeping calm and collected helped me push through.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of my entire website. It's really come together pretty quickly.

What I learned

I learned time management building this project and how to design everything before I even write a line of code. It helped a lot and made the process a lot faster. Also, I learned that setting deadlines for myself helped to speed up the process.

What's next for The Tutorz

I'm planning on adding a lot of functionalities into it, such as video calling, chatting, editing accounts, etc and then putting it on my portfolio for colleges to see.
