Inspiration
Blanca and me always talk about how education could be improved with technology, she as an education professional and me as a data engineer we think a lot about what universities and education systems in general lack of. Today education it's pivoting to a competence based system instead of "courses" and subjects, but there is no user-friendly system to manage and keep control of this new way to educate, so we thought it could be a good idea to create one.
What it does
Edu360 is an app for educators and students, from the educator side, they can upload and build courses based on competences, implement continuous assessment and track competence evidences. We added a job seeking feature based on those competences instead of diploma based education. The main goal with this app is to improve quality of life from both students and educators.
How we built it
The app it's far from finished, we have a html, css mockups with a python Flask backend, for the moment it has basic interaction, but it lacks a lot of components like data inputs from the educator side, data retrieval from de database and a few more things we would like to improve over time.
Challenges we ran into
First, Blanca as education expert doesn't have any programming experience, but she has brought an invaluable knowledge about the field of education, part of the time we invested in teach her some basic programming skills and technology related tasks, from my side as a data engineer on my day to day I work mainly with data without having to worry much about frontends, backends so I had to remember my old days doing some frontend and backend development while teaching Blanca basic programming concepts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We came for the learning and for the experience, even we maybe didn't finish the project as we expected because as we said it's far from completed we are proud of all the progress we made about the idea. Starting to see an idea we had for some time materialized in a web browser tab it's an enjoyable experience
What we learned
From my side I learned that IA/ML/Big data... are cool things to work with, but we should always remember that those technologies doesn't make much sense if they are not improving people's life right now education has to change, and I think that with technology we can improve it a lot. From Blanca's side she has experienced what is to build a web app that can solve a problem she sees every day, she learned a little of frontend development and a bit of coding.
What's next for Edu360
We would like to keep working on this project, the main idea is to implement all the functionality we thought would be cool for an MVP but a big idea we have to make edu360 grow it's to release it as a plugin for LMS (learning management systems) systems like moodle, sakai, sensei and others big players to make it easy for universities and educational institutions to implement it into their own systems. We also would like to involve more professionals(educators, therapist, social workers, counselors....) to get their points of view about how to improve the software and make a system that helps everybody in their educational process.
