Inspiration

It’s evident that investing is an incredible vehicle to grow generational wealth. The problem is that however accessible the markets are, it’s rarely welcoming to new individuals. The idea of placing your hard earned cash in the hands of corporations in hopes of positive outcomes can be extremely scary. What if it didn’t have to be a reach into the unknown?

Personalized market updates, portfolio risk insight and customized asset allocation shift our focus on providing maximum value for beginner and veteran investors alike. Ultimately, our goal is to empower all who seek to achieve financial freedom to take that crucial first step.

What it does

Eddies’ main purpose is to guide first time investors into the realm of stocks and bonds. Users begin their journey through a personalized questionnaire where we seek to understand their financial situation and goals. Based on their answers, a tailored pre-built portfolio is suggested and implemented. Heading to the risk analysis page, you’re able to see how much risk you’re taking on as well as the various factors that may impact your future returns.

Not a fan of the pre-built portfolio? No problem.

There are countless ways to customize, removing and adding as many assets as you desire. That way, you can ease into the portfolio that suits you.

How the app works

Eddie is split into two sections - your total portfolio make-up, and your overall risk level. After generating your custom profile, you’ll be brought to the tab showing you detailed information on each of your financial assets.

Switching to the next tab will gauge your portfolio riskiness in accordance with your risk appetite. There are also three blocks with future indication arrows: market risk, interest rate risk, and business risk. We believe these three factors have the greatest impact on how your allocation performs - clicking on them will show you recent trends in each category. With that in mind, you can make an educated decision on what you choose to invest further in. Knowledge is power!

Challenges we ran into

The initial idea creation was difficult to formulate. We had a lot of variables we wanted to include but ended up having to sacrifice some external functions to focus on our core competencies.

The other big challenge was learning an entire new language (Swift) to create a mobile app that worked well with our idea. We wanted to create a more aesthetic interface and a mobile app seemed like the best interface to use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

During this challenge, we wanted to create something disruptive and innovative. What we accomplished was an application that can really market itself to new investors and allow more people to wet their feet in the financial investing realm. We had an extremely fun and exciting time building Eddie!

What we learned

It was definitely a masterclass in teamwork and communication. There were so many moving parts and we had to find a flow to be on the same page as one another. Our group had to adapt to the Swift language, which none of us had really touched before. The four of us excelled both technically and logistically, making this Hackathon extremely memorable and valuable.

What's next for Eddie

Although this app is within our scope of what we imagined, there is still lots of work to do. With the sheer amount of investment vehicles that exist out there, allowing further customization and options for risk analysis is always something of value. In order to really scale, there needs to be a constant growing user base. Additional functionality and increased personalization are great avenues to explore.
