Inspiration

The inspiration for EcoQuest came from the urgent need to address sustainability through innovative technology. As a team, we recognized that many people—especially younger generations—engage more deeply with issues when they’re presented in an interactive and fun way. We wanted to create something that could educate, inspire, and empower individuals to take action for the environment. The idea of combining gaming with sustainability was born out of a desire to make learning impactful and engaging, while showing how even small actions can lead to transformative changes.

What it does

EcoQuest is an immersive, educational game that teaches players about sustainability through an engaging storyline and interactive challenges. Players begin in the present, but time-travel to a dystopian future where the environment has been devastated. Tasked with preventing this bleak future, players tackle real-world environmental challenges, like cleaning polluted rivers, replanting forests, and reducing waste. As they complete tasks, they return to the future to see incremental improvements. The game includes features like a Sustainability Index to track progress, Interactive Learning Modules to teach key sustainability concepts, and a Global Ranking System to foster competitive spirit. Through our partnerships with UN Bodies, Universities* and other **Academic Institutions; we created the Quarterly Competitions Feature to tackle specific global issues, with top players earning recognition and prizes for their innovative solutions.

How we built it

We started by brainstorming the core concept and mechanics of the game, focusing on creating a seamless blend of education, entertainment, and impact. The game’s foundation was built using:

  • Unity for game design and development, providing a dynamic and immersive user experience.
  • GitHub for version control and collaboration, ensuring smooth teamwork and project management.
  • C# for scripting and implementing game mechanics, allowing us to create interactive and dynamic gameplay.
  • Canva for designing engaging visuals for the video demo presentation to explain the mechanics of the game.

The storyline was carefully crafted to emphasize the ripple effect of individual actions, while the mechanics were designed to balance education with fun.

Challenges we ran into

Like any ambitious project, we faced our fair share of challenges:

  • Balancing gameplay with education: It was critical to make sure the game was engaging without overwhelming players with information. We iterated multiple times to achieve the perfect balance.
  • Technical hurdles: Integrating real-world data into gameplay presented complexities, as we needed to ensure the data was accurate and seamlessly integrated without disrupting the player experience.
  • Collaboration across skill sets: With team members specializing in different areas, aligning our technical, design, and narrative goals took time but ultimately enriched the final product.
  • Time constraints: Building a project from scratch within the timeframe of the hackathon was intense, but it pushed us to focus, prioritize, and innovate.

What we learned

Throughout this journey, we learned the power of collaboration and the importance of leveraging diverse skill sets to bring a complex idea to life. We deepened our understanding of sustainability, particularly how to translate abstract concepts into tangible, actionable challenges. Most importantly, we learned that technology, when paired with creativity, can be a powerful tool for social impact.

What's next for EcoQuest!

We have big plans for EcoQuest’s future!

  • Quarterly Global Competitions: Expanding on our ranking system, we’ll introduce new quarterly challenges tied to real-world environmental issues, such as coral reef restoration or waste management. Winners will earn prizes and recognition for their innovative solutions.
  • Academic Partnerships: Collaborating with universities worldwide to make EcoQuest an academic tool for teaching sustainability in an interactive way.
  • Community Engagement: Building a dedicated EcoQuest community where players can share their ideas and collaborate on real-world projects inspired by the game.
  • Enhanced Gameplay Features: Introducing more complex eco-challenges, multiplayer modes, and AR/VR integration to further immerse players. Additionaly, a possibility of the game in 3D mode.
  • Scaling Impact: Partnering with environmental organizations to amplify the reach of EcoQuest and encourage players to participate in real-world sustainability efforts.
