We (Angus Tian and Robert Ren) decided to make an educational-based web app, EcoFighters, that incentivizes and teaches students at a young age to respect our environment and world. Our program functions between a teacher and a student. Using our web app, the teacher first assigns challenges relating to being environmentally friendly: picking up trash, bringing a reusable water bottle, recycling appropriately, etc. The students, who receive the challenges on their side of the web app, then complete these challenges and submit image/video proof of it through our web app, which goes directly to the teacher, who can check them off for being a good Samaritan! Through completing tasks, students earn points in our application, which is then used to rank students on a classroom leaderboard, adding a bit of fun competition. The teacher can reward students for ranking high on the leaderboard and being a good friend to our world!
Our program relates to the theme, as it helps address environmental issues in our community by teaching and motivating young students in our community to act against the climate crisis through small actions each day like picking up trash, reusing material, and recycling, which can add up to big change. With the addition of rewards and the leaderboard, it creates an engaging experience that will motivate students even more to help clean and respect the environment. In addition, this project has huge potential and endless possibilities. For example, we could create an algorithm that automatically creates tasks for students, to decrease the workload on the teacher, or even use it with a group of friends.
With this program, we hope we can promote healthy environmental habits in fun and rewarding ways to young students. This way, we can help spread awareness to our community about the environmental crisis, and ways we can mitigate it.
