Inspiration

Our team is passionate about bringing awareness to how our actions affect the environment. It is very common for people to drive their cars to get to their destination without really thinking about how much CO2 gets emitted with every drive. This app was made to shine a light on this issue in a fun and informative way.

What it does

This app starts off by allowing the user to select their car make, model, and year. Based on these selections, they are guided to take a quiz and see how well they know the impact of their car on the environment. They are asked question such as how many trees must be planted in order to cancel out the amount of CO2 emitted for a year of driving. Questions like these are eye-opening and make the user aware of the true impact that driving a car has more than just seeing numerical data. The concept of car-pooling in order to be more eco-friendly is also introduced to remind people that we can reduce CO2 emissions. Lastly, the user can see how much they scored on the quiz and share their results with their friends!

How we built it

We built this app prototype using Figma. For our data, we used a dataset from the Canadian government containing information on CO2 emissions of 7,385 different vehicles link to data .

Challenges we ran into

The most challenging part of creating this app was thinking of simple questions that were eye-opening and allowed the user to reflect on their actions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the way the app turned out as it is engaging with many visuals and interactive with the quiz! We think this prototype is a great foundation and can be extended in many informative ways.

What we learned

We learned how essential communication is for teamwork and finishing our project, especially since all team members participated virtually in different time zones. To combat this, we called frequently and planned out tasks. These skills are key to success as being able to communicate well allows for work to be done more efficiently and ensures that everyone is on the same page.

What's next for Eco Car App

We want to extend this to make similar quizzes/games on other topics related to sustainability and how different parts of your lifestyle can affect the environment. This quiz format is a fun yet effective way to inform people that their daily actions are more impactful than we think.
