Inspiration

As college students, we message our friends and announce in our group chats several times a day in order to determine when and where to eat, and with who. This process is inefficient and takes time out of our busy days. Oftentimes we may have just got out of class, or we have an exam coming up and we can only spare half an hour to eat. That doesn't mean we should have to eat alone. We created EatWithMe to help college students make the most of their mealtime and live happier, more social lives.

What it does

EatWithMe is a mobile app that allows you to announce to all your friends whenever you are looking for someone to eat with at the touch of a button. Your friends will receive push notifications as well as a post in their feed saying that you want to eat at this time. On your feed, you can see at a glance who is available to eat right now, and select posts from others to notify them of your interest.

We added features to make sure EatWithMe is as simple and quick as possible. Presets allow you to save settings for a post for locations and circles you frequent. You can also save your favorite people and locations to save time when creating a post.

How we built it

We used react-native with expo to create our mobile development environment, and fireship for the backend.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges with the mobile development environment, which had many connection issues and worked very inconsistently depending on the connection strength and device.

Additionally, for 3/4ths of our team this was our first time using react native and doing mobile development.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a proof-of-concept of an idea we initially thought to be too farfetched for this time frame.

We are also proud of our push notifications feature and quick, streamlined UI design.

What we learned

We learned a ton about react-native and mobile development, where the bottlenecks are and what issues can go wrong. We also learned how to keep a clear vision of a simple product when working on a complex project.

What's next for EatWithMe

  1. Polishing, removing compromises and replacing with initial designs (ID based friend add, cleaner UI, etc.)
  2. Add public feed to meet new people.
  3. Integrate with college campuses
