Inspiration
Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects many children around the world, and has affected many notable people. We wanted to create a product that helped children with dyslexia overcome their challenge of learning how to read.
What it does
Dyslexicode allows dyslexic children to practice decoding words by phonic sounds, which is very important in helping them learn to read (out loud.) Users are given a word, and one letter or group of letters in the word is emphasized at a time. They are given multiple phonic sounds, and they identify the correct phonic sounds that corresponds with the letter(s), then they move on to the next letter(s) or word.
How we built it
We made Dyslexicode as a Scratch project (block code.) We wrote our own code and took some of the graphics from the Scratch sprite library (buttons), while creating others (words, backgrounds.)
Challenges we ran into
Initially, it was hard to come up with an original solution to a problem. While we were making Dyslexicode, we all had different ideas on how to build and organize the game, and we had to express all of our ideas clearly and come to an agreement on it. The code had some bugs at times, which we fixed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of facing our challenges, which means selecting an original idea and debugging the code when it didn't work properly. We're also proud of working as a team and collaborating on the presentation.
What we learned
We learned about many of the struggles of kids with dyslexia. We also learned how to solve problems and communicate our ideas more clearly.
What's next for Dyslexicode
We will add more words to make the game longer, and add better graphic and sound effects to make the game more fun to play.
