Inspiration
DustStorm Survival was inspired by the eerie calm and danger of space exploration, and the resilience of astronauts facing the unknown. We wanted to mix retro pixel art charm with the cinematic tension of surviving alien weather.
What it does
You play as Captain Mars, leading your crew, Deimos, Phobos, Olympus, and Nova - through relentless Martian duststorms. The goal: survive waves of magnetic debris, protect the base capsules, and restore lost signals across the colony.
How we built it
Built using a pixel-art engine with low-poly 3D elements and dynamic camera motion. The visual pipeline was crafted in Aseprite and Blender, while sound design fused 8-bit chiptune energy with ambient synth layers via FamiTracker and Ableton Live.
Challenges we ran into
Working within subscription limits and generation quotas meant constantly adapting our creative workflow. Each iteration had to count, from testing UI placements to regenerating visuals within token or render caps. Balancing ambition with efficiency became part of the design challenge. Additionally, learning the Rosebud AI pipeline introduced new ways to think about asset management and procedural generation. Translating concept art into playable, lightweight code while keeping consistent tone and pixel style required patience and iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a playable survival system that blends storytelling, music, and gameplay rhythm, each dodge, jump, and duststorm feels meaningful. The lore ties into every level, giving even small gameplay moments emotional depth.
What we learned
Cohesion matters more than complexity. By keeping the UI simple and the art direction focused, we discovered how to make tension, color, and sound carry emotion without realism.
What's next for DustStorm Survival
We’re developing new story arcs for the Vegetation Capsule, Lab, and Spaceship zones, adding survival tools, meteor hazards, and character dialogue to deepen immersion. A community leaderboard and adaptive weather AI are also planned.
