Inspiration
Social Media with few constraints is the new era of social engagements. Plain old boring social media like Facebook, Instagram are already there in most of our phones. But restrictive social media like One Pic Daily where we have to take picture from our camera once a day is gaining popularity due its restrictive nature. Similarly, we are planning to make a platform where location is very essential and we are going to very essential.
What it does
Drop It is an application where every post is attached to your location and you can only view, edit and delete the post you made at a specific location. Sort of like dropping a message. Anyone else on the same location can also view the post based on the post visibility settings.
How we built it
We built it using React and Firebase. Just for the demonstration and easier deployment we have used Firebase for authentication and database. This helps us accelerate into the prototype development and get results very soon. We are also using Vercel for deployment, PWA for mobile applications and leaflet for map designs.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we faced during our project is map rendering. This was a big challenges for us as it was one of the main feature of our application. We ran into rendering and styling issues, and one of the mentors helped us guide through.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The idea is really unique and its one of our big achievements. These location based restriction will definitely be fun and challenging to a lot of us, while also helping people with the same. It can be used to leave cute notes as well as tourist attraction reviews across the map.
What we learned
Teamwork is what I learned the most from this experience. We collaborated with our civil engineer friend for guiding through mapping challenges. So team work and working together is really what brought this project to life. Some of the technical things, we learned from this project are working with leaflet, react and Firebase all together, as well as debugging.
What's next for Drop It
Looking ahead, we’re excited to evolve Drop It into a more robust platform with even greater location precision and user interactivity. Our roadmap includes:
Enhanced Mobile Experience: Developing a dedicated mobile application for smoother, on-the-go access. Feature Expansion: Introducing advanced privacy settings, richer media support, and more intuitive interfaces. Community Building: Fostering an ecosystem where users can discover, interact with, and contribute to a living map of local stories.
Drop It isn’t just an application—it’s a fresh approach to social engagement that invites you to explore and share your world, one location at a time.
