Inspiration
Our main inspiration stemmed from a fusion of the attractive and addictive style of simple arcade games with the current events of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. We understood that sometimes simplicity is the best policy. Many of the most popular and viral video games in gaming history such as Super Mario Bros, Flappy Bird, and Snake, have had a very simple gaming mechanic. Especially with the hype of the Olympic Games felt across the globe, sports, national pride, and arcade gaming was a combination we could not pass up on.
What it does
Volleyball game with drones that try to hit the ball over the net to the opponent’s side. When you hit the ball and it lands on the opponent’s side of the floor, you gain a point. First 7 points wins. WASD and arrow key controls to move the drones in different directions. Allows for local multiplayer.
How we built it
We used Python and the arcade game engine, as our game is an arcade game. Adobe illustrator and photoshop were used for making graphics.
Challenges we ran into
Time zone differences. Learning the logistics of a hackathon as it was everyone’s first time participating in a hackathon. First time working with a physics engine.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to code a somewhat complicated game in the span of a few days despite multiple distractions in our daily lives
What we learned
We started off barely remembering any Python, and finished the hackathon having learned a lot more about Python than we originally knew, while reinforcing our prior knowledge of the language. Additionally, we learned how to work fast and communicate our ideas to one another.
What's next for DRONESPIKE
Online multiplayer.
Single player against an AI.
More countries and drones.
Different powers for each drone and country.
More game modes such as rallying the volleyball back and forth for as long as possible.
Devise a better hitbox for the drones.
