DrepaAI: The AI Companion for Sickle Cell Disease Patients and Doctors

Inspiration

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most common genetic disorder worldwide, affecting millions of people, particularly in low-income countries. Patients and doctors in these regions often lack access to critical information and resources to manage the disease effectively. This gap in healthcare inspired us to create DrepaAI, an AI-driven companion designed to bridge this information divide and provide support to both patients and healthcare professionals.

What We Learned

Throughout the development of DrepaAI, we gained profound insights into the challenges faced by SCD patients and their healthcare providers. We learned about the critical importance of timely and accurate information in managing SCD and the vast disparities in healthcare access globally. Additionally, we deepened our understanding of the capabilities and limitations of AI in healthcare applications.

How We Built Our Project

AI Model and Cloud Platform

DrepaAI utilizes the Mistral Model for its AI capabilities. This model was chosen for its robustness and ability to handle complex queries, making it ideal for providing detailed and accurate information about SCD. For inference, we deployed the model on the Groq cloud platform, known for its high performance and efficiency in handling AI workloads.

User Interface

The user interface for DrepaAI was built using Streamlit, a powerful and user-friendly framework for creating interactive web applications. Streamlit allowed us to quickly prototype and iterate on the UI, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience for users.

Features

  • Chatbot Functionality: DrepaAI offers a conversational interface where users can ask questions about SCD, symptoms, treatments, and management strategies.

Challenges We Faced

  1. Data Availability: One of the primary challenges was accessing high-quality, up-to-date data on SCD, particularly from low-income regions. We had to aggregate data from various sources and ensure its reliability and relevance.

DrepaAI represents a significant step forward in using AI to support Sickle Cell Disease patients and healthcare providers, particularly in low-resource settings. By leveraging advanced Mistral AI models and cloud infrastructure, we have created a tool that can deliver critical information and support to those who need it most. We hope that DrepaAI will contribute to improving the quality of life for SCD patients and aid doctors in providing better care.
