Inspiration

The team was brainstorming on the first day of the hackathon, and we realized that many of the listed ideas had already been done before. At that moment, a team member yelled out the idea to check for ideas that had already been taken. That is how our project idea formed.

What it does

Done Before? is a webapp that takes in a series of keywords and then, when the search button is clicked, it searches the internet for valid results, filtered by website type for the patent and IP sections, and all results for the general section.

How we built it

We built the app using HTML/CSS and JS. We also use the Google API. AI tools were also used to create the website.

Challenges we ran into

Filtering for IP information was very difficult at first, and I tried to use a USPTO API, but ran into network errors. To solve the problem, I simplified the JS file and just filtered the Google search query to specific websites that hold IP information.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that the app works as intended and is a free and quick way to see if an idea has already been done before. I am also proud of the team for building a project like this in such a short period.

What we learned

While building this project, we realized that many ideas are not unique and that checking if they have been done before takes too much time. From this need, we created a prototype that checks the internet for similar ideas. As a team, we learned how to create value and move with agility while building software.

What's next for Done Before?

The next step for Done Before? is to expand the functionality and accuracy of the platform, perform a customer analysis to see which demographics we should target, and figure out a successful monetization method. We want people everywhere to know if their idea has been done before and to keep thinking of ways to help the world.
