Inspiration

After some research we found multiple studies that doctors and other health-care professionals weren't washing their hands between patient visits, even though it's supposed to be a standard. At some hospitals compliance was reported at below 40%, leading to the spread of Health-Care Associated Infections (HAI). So we began ideating a wristband that could track when doctors wash/sanitized their hands and remind them between patient visits. But we pivoted once we realized that this was part of a bigger problem- doctors forgetting or ignoring some basic rules they were taught in school. We later found that the World Health Organization (WHO) created a checklist to help doctors combat the problem, so we decided to build an system to help Doctors with these checklists.

What it does

Currently, the app is a checklist for doctors broken up into three sections- "Before induction of anaesthesia", "Before skin incision", and "Before patient leaves operating room". The checklist includes everything from checking if the patient has an allergy, to making sure all team members have introduced themselves.

How I built it

We broke up the WHO's checklist into three pages- then designed an android app that listed the action and provides a checkbox for doctors or nurses to fill once the action has been completed.

Challenges I ran into

With our initial design we ran into challenges designing the hardware for the doctors wristband system. We then pivoted to focusing on the app, where we still had challenges like testing our app using the emulators in android studio to coding the actions of the checkboxes.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

None of our team-members came in with app development experience but we all have a deeper understanding of how to build an app. Also, we actually built the app!

What I learned

How to build a checklist app using android studio and how to test an app using a software emulator. During the hackathon we also learned about web development and the cloud migration process.

What's next for Doctor's Checklist

In terms of the app, we want to have checklists saved for individual patients, a form to log patient data, as well as a nicer overall design. In terms of hardware we like to add sensor for different tools doctors use that way when they are completing the checklist they can actually log all of their tools.
