Inspiration

The idea for Dishcovery was born out of a personal experience. A close friend once suffered a severe allergic reaction after unknowingly consuming food that contained peanuts. The meal, prepared by a well-intentioned homecook, lacked clear allergen labeling. The ensuing emergency resulted long hours in hospital. It was a reminder of how a simple miscommunication could have life-threatening consequences. This incident ignited our passion to create a safer, more reliable food-sharing platform.

What it does

Our project, Dishcovery is a web app that revolutionizes community food-sharing by connecting local homecooks with nearby food enthusiasts. It streamlines order management, ensures accurate dietary information, and eliminates the hassle of manual calculations and miscommunications.

Connect Local Homecooks & Food Enthusiasts: Homecooks can easily update their daily menus, while foodies can quickly locate and order from nearby cooks. Streamlined Ordering Process: With a user-friendly interface, buyers can add items to their cart, place orders, and receive detailed invoices automatically. Enhanced Safety Through Detailed Information: Every menu item comes with comprehensive dietary and allergen details, ensuring that users with specific food restrictions can make safe choices. Automated Notifications: Both homecooks and buyers receive timely email updates regarding order statuses, cancellations, and other important events.

How we built it

Building Dishcovery was an iterative process that combined careful planning with rapid prototyping:

User-Centric Design: We started by mapping out the user journey—from homecook registration to order placement—focusing on creating an intuitive experience for both parties. Leveraging Modern Technologies: Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery were used to build a responsive and dynamic interface. Backend: Python with Flask and Jinja templates served as the backbone of the application. Database & APIs: We integrated MySQL for data management alongside the OpenRouteService API and Google Maps API to enable dynamic filtering based on user proximity. Iterative Development and Testing: Frequent testing allowed us to refine features, ensuring that allergen information was accurate and that the ordering system was robust and error-free.

Challenges we ran into

Creating Dishcovery came with its share of obstacles:

Real-Time Data Management: Synchronizing menu updates and order statuses in real time required innovative backend solutions. Accurate Allergen and Dietary Information: Ensuring that every dish clearly communicated potential allergens and dietary restrictions was more complex than anticipated. We had to implement rigorous checks and validations to prevent any misinformation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Enhanced Safety Features: Dishcovery's robust system for displaying detailed dietary and allergen information sets it apart. We are proud that our platform can potentially prevent life-threatening situations by ensuring food safety. Streamlined Communication: Automated notifications and real-time order tracking have greatly improved the reliability of the food-sharing process. Community Empowerment: By connecting local homecooks with food enthusiasts, we are not just facilitating food orders—we're building a community that values transparency, safety, and sustainability.

What we learned

Through the development of Dishcovery, we learned:

The Importance of Empathy in Design: Every feature, from allergen notifications to order confirmations, was designed with the end-user in mind—especially those with strict dietary needs. Technical Integration: Merging various technologies (APIs, databases, and web frameworks) required careful planning, but it ultimately led to a robust, scalable platform. Iterative Improvement: Each challenge we faced, from real-time data handling to user interface tweaks, taught us valuable lessons in both technical and user-centric design.

What's next for Dishcovery

Integrated Payment Interface: We plan to incorporate a secure payment gateway directly into the platform, making transactions seamless and convenient for both homecooks and food enthusiasts. Strengthened Security and Safety Measures: In addition to enhancing allergen and dietary data accuracy, we will work on improving overall platform security to protect user data and ensure safe transactions. Deeper Community Integration: We are also exploring a review and rating system that fosters trust and transparency between homecooks and food enthusiasts.
