Inspiration

Too many people arguing on the internet and attacking each other, and being subjected to hate speech, without consideration for opinions or other factors affecting viewpoints.

What it does

It is an informational communication website, such as trending news or topics that are up for discourse and discussion for the audience. The audience can get an idea of what most people's opinions (on a scale of agree to disagree) are, and every user has to provide a mandatory explanation (may be just a few thoughts will do as well) for the agree/disagree/neither that they've put in. However, their input is not subjected to any arguments or replies, and all users have randomized anonymous usernames such as @AA3481 to maintain privacy, in case one has unpopular or controversial opinions, and to avoid influential people from swaying the judgement of others.

The site is intended to take the common strings/words used in the mandatory explanation for their input (such as this many people under the agreed section have used the words #health-issues), that way everyone can get an idea of the reasons behind opinions that people may have on the given topic.

IF a user is open to having conversation, sharing their viewpoints, and possibly being open to more questions by other users, they will have the option to chat with other users who have agreed to do the same. This is optional and not counted as a contribution to the post discussion.

Some news, may have problematic or fake sources, so users will be given a chance to upload contesting material to challenge the source such as photographic evidence, more scientifically approved articles, etc.

How we built it

** Design: Photoshop, Canva ** Front-end: HTML/CSS/ JavaScript on Visual Studio Code ** Database of user comment information: mySQL/ tried with Express but still kinda lost

Challenges we ran into

** Connecting the functionality of the websites to the back end components: we are mostly beginners...

Accomplishments that we're proud of

** Being able to encapsulate the concepts of

  • dangerous yet helpful vastness of information on the internet with zero moderation,
  • fake news, free speech, hate speech,
  • empathy through exposure to opinions,
  • possible expression of voices of marginalized communities on the internet that are often overpowered by the popular majority- through the existing sections so that people are exposed to more than one viewpoint.

What we learned

that it takes much longer than 24 hours to build an idea, a website from scratch, and add all the other additional components.....
