Inspiration

The inspiration for our project stem from so many recent reoccurring natural disasters and the need for quicker response from our community.

What it does

Disaster Relief Unit is a community response app where allows volunteers to find people in need faster and allows users and volunteers to meet more effectively. The app also helps find locations and informs in real time where to find volunteers to help with food, water or communication via multi-platform app.

How we built it

We incorporated CSS, JavaScript, HTML5 and Google Cloud Platform API to create a multi-platform website app.

Challenges we ran into

We originally thought of using both text and web together using the Beacon API as well as Google Maps API with our app however, we decided to start with a website and later hope to build on the concept using Beacon at a later time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were jumping up and down for joy when we figured out how to integrate a working Google Maps API without the dreaded restriction block message.

What we learned

We learned a-lot from workshops such as by BNY Mellon, specifically on how to practice coding and even how to become a Java Champion in 20 years or less. We also learned from taking the Bootstrap workshop how to quickly create a working website. This project in particular helped us learn through trial and error how to use the Google Cloud Platform, JavaScript and CSS.

What's next for Disaster Relief Unit

Our plans for the next steps in Disaster Relief Unit is to include Proximity Beacon API to help locate those in disaster zones more precisely using Indoor floor level which would improve use of the app and help all users find and help with much needed resources.
