Inspiration

The inspiration for Dev's World came from the idea of blending classic 2D platforming mechanics with fast-paced combat. We wanted to create a game where simplicity in movement — running and double-jumping — would push players to master timing, precision, and strategy. Influenced by retro games and modern speedrunners, our goal was to design an experience that feels both nostalgic and innovative.

What it does

Dev's World is a 2D action game where players control a fast-moving character capable of running and double-jumping while battling AI-powered bots. The bots grow smarter as the game progresses, adapting to player tactics and creating unpredictable combat scenarios. The goal is to clear levels by eliminating enemies and strategically navigating the environment using only the limited movement mechanics, keeping the gameplay challenging yet rewarding.

How we built it

We built Dev's World using [insert game engine, e.g., Unity or Godot], focusing on tight, responsive controls and smooth animations. The AI bots were programmed with adaptive behavior, allowing them to adjust their attack patterns based on player actions. Level designs emphasize momentum, with obstacles and enemy placements crafted to test both reflexes and strategic thinking. Every jump and shot was fine-tuned to ensure seamless gameplay.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing the simplicity of movement with engaging gameplay. Without complex parkour mechanics, we had to find creative ways to make running and double-jumping feel dynamic and strategic. Tuning the AI was another hurdle — we wanted bots to be challenging without feeling unfair, so we spent time refining their reactions and attack patterns.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a game that feels both simple and deep. The fluidity of movement and combat, combined with smart AI behavior, creates a fast-paced experience that keeps players on their toes. We're especially excited about how each level pushes players to master timing and precision, turning basic mechanics into thrilling challenges.

What we learned

We learned the power of minimalism in game design — how limiting mechanics can drive creativity rather than restrict it. Designing AI that reacts to player behavior taught us a lot about balancing difficulty and unpredictability. Most importantly, we discovered how crucial player feedback is, helping us fine-tune the experience for maximum fun.

What's next for Dev's World

Next, we plan to add more enemy types with unique behaviors, introduce special weapons or power-ups, and design new levels with creative layouts. We’re also exploring a time-attack mode for speedrunners and a leaderboard system to encourage competitive play. Ultimately, we want Dev's World to evolve into a game that feels simple to pick up but endlessly challenging to master.
