Inspiration
After the pandemic, remote and hybrid jobs grew in popularity due to their accessibility and flexibility. Unfortunately, this mode of work came with a cost: mental health.
Remote workers often struggle to take regular breaks since they lack the social cues of in-person offices. Without coworkers to remind them to pause or stretch, they tend to overwork, leading to burnout and reduced productivity.
Our team was inspired to design Chillax, a simple yet powerful tool that reminds workers to take mindful, meaningful breaks. We wanted to make the workday healthier, more balanced, and human.
What It Does
Chillax is a browser extension designed to address the challenges of burnout and isolation prevalent in remote and hybrid work settings since the pandemic. The core problem it solves is the lack of social cues that typically prompt workers in an office to take mindful, regular breaks.
The product tackles this by using an AI Scheduling Agent that syncs with a worker’s Google Calendar to intelligently determine the optimal time and duration for a break, based on their scheduled workload and potential stress level. When it’s time to pause, Chillax automatically suspends active tabs and launches an interactive break experience. The main design decision to promote mental wellness and connection is the interactive break feature, which offers solo mindful exercises or, crucially, multiplayer mini-games like Tic-Tac-Toe, pairing colleagues for friendly, five-minute social interactions. By blending AI-driven scheduling with playful social connection, Chillax transforms an isolating pause into a moment of restoration and collaboration.
Core Features
- Calendar Sync – Imports meetings and deadlines to map out the user’s focus hours.
- AI Scheduling Agent Uses an algorithm ( t_{\text{break}} = f(\text{schedule}, \text{stress_level}) ) to determine when and how long breaks should be.
- Interactive Breaks – Offers solo or multiplayer mini-games like Tic-Tac-Toe, Connect Four, or XO.
- Social Connection – Matches colleagues on similar break times for light chat or friendly gameplay.
- Emoji Reactions – Allows quick, positive interactions (👋 😊 😎 ❤️).
- Mindful Exercises – When alone, users can do 5-minute stretches, breathing sessions, or short mindfulness activities.
The extension pauses active work tabs and launches a “break screen,” turning short pauses into opportunities for recharging and connection.
How We Built It
We designed the prototype in Figma and refined visuals in Adobe Illustrator, focusing on calm colour palettes and smooth interactions.
The planned development stack includes:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (for Chrome Extension framework)
- Backend: Node.js and Google Calendar API
- AI Engine: Python with TensorFlow or OpenAI API for adaptive break logic
Equation logic (prototype):
[ B_t = \alpha (T_{\text{work}}) + \beta (\text{Meeting Density}) + \gamma (\text{Stress Index}) ]
where ( B_t ) represents the optimal break time.
Our main design decisions center on promoting wellness and connection through intelligent scheduling and interactive gamification.
AI Calendar Sync and Scheduling Logic: This is the most foundational decision. Instead of a simple timer, Chillax imports the user’s Google Calendar to map out meetings and focus hours. The AI then applies an algorithm to automatically determine and schedule the optimal break time (B_t). This decision ensures breaks are timely, non-disruptive, and personalized, directly combating the tendency of remote workers to overwork and forget to pause. It makes the break system adaptive rather than static.
Interactive, Dual-Mode Breaks (Solo/Social): When a break is triggered, the user is presented with a choice: Mindful Exercises (stretches, breathing) for solo recharging, or Social Connection via multiplayer mini-games (Connect Four, XO) with a paired colleague. This design decision directly addresses both burnout (via mindfulness) and isolation (via social play). The short, five-minute, low-commitment nature of the interactions—along with simple Emoji Reactions—mimics the light, positive connection of a watercooler chat, making it easy for colleagues to reconnect and bond without pressure.
Calm and Accessible UI: We designed the prototype using a calm color palette and smooth interactions, focusing on a user-friendly and aesthetically pleasing interface. Specifically, the palette features soothing shades of purples and blues (#151875, #29144C, #7189FF, #7A5CDB) alongside lighter neutrals (#C2C5FA, #E2E0E5). This choice contributes to the product by making the break screen feel genuinely restorative and inviting, rather than just another intrusive productivity tool, thereby supporting the goal of stress reduction and mental wellness.
How our product relates to the design prompts
Chillax reflects the spirit of “Echoes of Tomorrow” by reimagining how technology can sustain human well-being in the evolving workplace. It anticipates a future where digital environments are adaptive, emotionally intelligent, and socially connected, bridging the gap between productivity and mindfulness through AI-driven design.
Reimagining a Persistent Human Challenge (General Prompt) Future Technologies & Anticipating Needs: The solution hinges on the AI Scheduling Agent that uses an algorithm to determine break times based on workload and stress level. This utilizes future-leaning AI/Machine Learning technology to move beyond simple timer reminders and anticipate the worker's needs dynamically.
Future Behaviors and Interactions: The feature anticipates a future where work is more fragmented and remote. It addresses this by designing a new form of interaction: multiplayer mini-games during break time. This reimagines the "water cooler moment" for a digital-first, future workplace, promoting collaboration and connection when traditional social cues are missing.
Reimagining the Workplace Environment (CBRE Prompt) Reimagining the Workplace: Chillax reimagines the digital workplace environment by integrating wellness and social connection directly into the workflow. By having the extension pause active work tabs and launch an interactive break screen, it forces a shift in behavior and environment—turning a purely productive space into a restorative and collaborative one.
Benefit for Employees: The core functionality (AI-scheduled breaks + interactive games) contributes to a healthier and more connected environment for employees. The focus is on mental well-being and reducing isolation, which are critical elements for the sustained success of any future hybrid workplace.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Time Constraints: Designing and conceptualizing under tight deadlines of a day.
- Limited Design Experience: Our team of three CS majors had to self-learn advanced design and animation tools quickly.
- Integration Complexity: Planning a seamless connection between Google Calendar, AI logic, and game modules required careful system design.
Despite these challenges, we managed to produce a clear, user-friendly prototype that reflects our vision.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Creating a practical, wellness-driven concept for remote and hybrid employees.
- Designing an appealing and accessible interface from scratch.
- Collaborating effectively under time pressure while learning new tools.
- Promoting awareness of mental health in tech environments.
What We Learned
This project taught us how to:
- Apply user-centered design principles in real-world contexts.
- Balance functionality and empathy when building productivity tools.
- Use Figma and Illustrator to communicate design intent efficiently.
- Work collaboratively and adapt quickly to technical and creative challenges.
We also realized that designing for mental wellness requires not just technology, but understanding human behavior.
